Letters to the Editor

Are you kidding us?

I must be missing something about the "Great Democracy" taking place in the USA. Recently showcased in Chicago, the fourth governor in 35 years is arrested and indicted. Seems to me in the last 10 years — in America's "political theater" of the absurd — is a laughing stock and getting worse by the day.

This week Illinois’ governor was handcuffed and taken away by the FBI for trying to sell the vacant Senate seat once occupied by President-elect Barack Obama — plus shake- downs and extortion. Tony Soprono wasn't even in the loop on this one.

Hillary Clinton's Senate seat is "up for grabs" or listed on eBay, if Caroline Kennedy doesn't get it as a Christmas gift. Another Congressman was arrested for having $90,000 of sting money in his freezer. He won re-election.

The ‘good’ Senator from Alaska, Ted Stevens, was found guilty on all 7 counts in his indictment concerning bribery. He won re-election.

What could voters possibly be thinking in that booth for the 5 minutes?

This bizarre and contemptible behavior by our elected officials goes way back to Ted Kennedy swimming for help as his car sank with Mary Jo Kopecky. Gary Hart had Donna Rice sitting on his lap.

This nutty political landscape makes one long for a Bill Clinton who just got caught in an uncomplicated extra- marital affair. Seems downright respectable and a decent display of man's weakness.

And the country portrays itself as a model for world's governments, for all to emulate and follow lock step. You've got to be kidding!

Paul D'Argent, 37209

A bunch of bunk

What a great governor! [Phil] Bredesen is cutting back the cost of his Christmas party by using wine from a previous party — what a great gesture to save Nashville some money.

You save a few thousand dollars on your party and waste several millions of dollars on your bunker! How can you look people in the eye that are losing their jobs knowing that you are blowing millions of our money on a useless bunker because your wife wanted it?

Seems like the waste starts with you.

"Tony Soprono wasn't even in the loop on this one."Ok Dargent, it's "Soprano". I can understand you not getting it right, but the NCP missed this one??Looks like the auto bailout failed, but I'm sure they will get it in the end. Well, the taxpayer will get it, but you know what I mean.

Uh... Jefferson lost his reelection bid to a Vietnamese refugee. Also, Stevens lost to Begich. If 'All politics is local', it seems that the locals in those areas have more sense than other places.

By: Dragon on 12/31/69 at 6:00

Ok, delete William Jefferson and insert Marion Barry. If that doesn't work, I'm sure there are dozens of other corrupt politicians to choose from.

By: Fundit on 12/31/69 at 6:00

barb, the bunker is being built by funds from private donations so the tax argument is mute. Although if you think about it, there are many other reasons why it shouldn't be built!

Silver Seven...Had breakfast this morning with Chris Ferrell. Dream on.

By: Captain Nemo on 12/31/69 at 6:00

Good morning!Great cartoon this morning. The gov of Illinois is great fooder for late night talk. I'm waiting to see what else the master criminal has done.

By: Dragon on 12/31/69 at 6:00

Fundit, the donations were moved from the mansion remodel to the bunker. The argument is not quite moot.

By: Jokapsig on 12/31/69 at 6:00

Maybe Makmooud (sic) or whatever his name is in Iran is right. The Islamists are waiting for our country to implode and we seem to be doing just that.

By: RTungsten on 12/31/69 at 6:00

D'Argent: Great waste of paper for the 52nd week in a row.As far as the BUNKER goes, they are not yet done with it and there will be another petition by the Gov and his wife for more funds for the "residence" which will be diverted to finish the bunker. Hopefully with the Repubs in control, they will put a stop to this stupid thing.

By: gdiafante on 12/31/69 at 6:00

The bunker is a good idea. Where else are they going to hide when we revolt?

By: BenDover on 12/31/69 at 6:00

Jefferson was re-elected once after the ugly refrigerator incident, wasn't he?

By: BenDover on 12/31/69 at 6:00

I think of all the Dems... Gov. Phil will be pretty safe.

By: Captain Nemo on 12/31/69 at 6:00

By: Idahoser on 12/31/69 at 6:00

I blame you voters.

Dargent, I don't judge my existence based on how many letters I get published (I don't write any, either). In fact, it's probably the LEAST important thing I can think of.

Ok, in defense of Bredesen, whom I've always admired since the day I met him in the computer store, I have to give him points for using leftovers. I mean, come on, that's what WE all do, isn't it? He could've donated those items to staff members or friends last time, but he didn't. The man bleeds "frugal" blood, seriously, as I've witnessed him shopping in the past. He compares pricing, availability, and then surfs the NET for a better deal. Or at least that was what he did back a few years ago. At least he's not selling a Senate seat on Ebay...yet~

By: BenDover on 12/31/69 at 6:00

“Idiots”? Redneck clichés? What’s you f’ing problem dude? If De-troit is so much better than Nashville then, by all means, I encourage you to go back.

By: Loner on 12/31/69 at 6:00

Good morning, Nashville!Great cartoon and great letters today. Bravo, Dargent 7.The Blagojevich Affair is a classic case of dynastic democracy meeting gubernatorial greed. Jesse Jackson Junior, of the Jackson dynasty, is “Candidate Number 5”? No surprise there, he has repeatedly expressed his ambitious desire for Obama’s seat.Others ask, “Was Rahm Emmanuel the go-between bagman?” The right-wing talk-show hosts are demanding to know the answers to the standard questions: “What did President-elect Obama know and when did he know it?” This thing is not going away anytime soon, there will be a cloud over Washington, DC on January 20th, and you don’t need to be a weatherman to know that. The dynastic democrats and the special interests are also cajoling Governor Patterson, in New York. Will it be the Cuomo clan or the Kennedy clan? It’s all quite disgusting. In Delaware, Governor Ruth Ann Minner was surely lobbied to appoint the “right” person to take Vice President-elect Joe Biden’s seat in the US Senate. As it turns out, Edward “Ted” Kaufman, a long-time Biden aide, has apparently been declared to be the Chosen One. Originally, Joe Biden’s son, Beau Biden, now serving in Iraq, was reportedly at the top of the short list of candidates for his dad’s job. Look for Junior Biden to claim his dad’s seat when he returns from Iraq; Kaufman appears to be something of a caretaker/seat-warmer for the Biden family seat.Illinois Governor Blagojevich’s alleged flagrant corruption may be unique in its boldness and scope, but any Governor is going to be pressured to deliver on favors owed and may be offered quid pro quos whenever a US Senate seat is up for grabs, in any state. ‘twas ever thus.In my view, US Senate vacancies should be filled in a transparent and democratic fashion, this “appointment” business is inherently flawed and invites corruption.I think that the US Senator replacement mechanism needs a Constitutional overhaul. The current situation is dangerous and undemocratic by nature. We read about “Flag Desecration” Amendments to the US Constitution and “Marriage Preservation” Amendments and so on, but nobody seems to be lobbying for a Constitutional fix for situations like these. Same thing goes for any support for a Constitutional Amendment to eliminate the dangerous and undemocratic Electoral College system. And the Vice Presidential candidate selection process is not just undemocratic, it is risky business; this lamentable situation requires a Constitutional remedy. Sadly, both major US political parties are content with the status quo.We, the People are content with Democracy lite, yet we are smug enough to think that we have perfected the democratic process to the point where we can impose it upon nations that we invade and occupy. That’s arrogance born of ignorance.

By: BenDover on 12/31/69 at 6:00

I like Bredesen. I didn't vote for him the first time but I did the second time.

By: gdiafante on 12/31/69 at 6:00

I've been to Detroit, it's not, trust me. And I doubt he's really from there. In fact, I think he lies quite a bit.

By: gdiafante on 12/31/69 at 6:00

We agree Ben, I did too. And, he saved the Preds...lol

By: gdiafante on 12/31/69 at 6:00

Well, the Preds was his baby when he was mayor, so if they would have left, it would have been a hit on him, IMO. But I'm happy with the result...

By: BenDover on 12/31/69 at 6:00

"We agree Ben, I did too. And, he saved the Preds..."Yeah... the carpet-bagger he is. What should we expect. lol

By: BenDover on 12/31/69 at 6:00

The electoral college is the only thing that preserves rural America. Without it the candidates would make a sweep of L.A, New York, Chicago, Atlanta, Miami, Houston, et al... and rural values would be flushed down the toilet. The EC is doing what it is supposed to do, protect the interests of smaller states because, thankfully, America is not a democracy but a representative republic of democratic states.

By: CAH on 12/31/69 at 6:00

Term Limits is the answer Loner. Then, if they have pushed to serve out the entire limit, hang'um

By: Dragon on 12/31/69 at 6:00

Loner, I believe that the US Senator replacement system lies entirely within each state's constitution. A bigger question about Blago - what about previous appointments (e.g., Kwame Raoul in the state senate?). You know that Blago's corruption didn't just magically appear in the last 6 months. What about his time as a US Congressman? Did he practice "pay for play" in the nation's capitol?

By: BenDover on 12/31/69 at 6:00

I have a bit of an aversion to term limits because that's what the voters should do is limit terms and root out the losers. That's not what happens in practice though because of incumbent power so I'm not sure what the solution is.

By: gdiafante on 12/31/69 at 6:00

This is, most-likely, common practice, Blago just got caught. We should just start over, wipe the slate clean. Of course, I WON'T go to Washington, would you?

By: BenDover on 12/31/69 at 6:00

Iraq's government functions much more like England's parlimentary system than our Constitutional Republic.

By: Captain Nemo on 12/31/69 at 6:00

By: gdiafante on 12/12/08We should just start over, wipe the slate clean. =============================================Kansas is the center of the country. That would be a good place to put the Capital.

By: Loner on 12/31/69 at 6:00

Ben, I dispute your underlying premises, you wrote, “Without it (the Electoral College) the candidates would make a sweep of L.A, New York, Chicago, Atlanta, Miami, Houston, et al... and rural values would be flushed down the toilet. The EC is doing what it is supposed to do, protect the interests of smaller states because, thankfully, America is not a democracy but a representative republic of democratic states.”Ben, you are still echoing the discredited idea that state’s rights trump individual rights, that argument was settled in 1865, and reaffirmed in 1964 (Voter’s Rights Act etc.) Under the current situation, the all or none tradition, millions of individual voters have their votes completely nullified by the majority vote, no matter how slim the majority. In states like New York, upstate voters tend to vote Republican, but the cities tend to vote Democratic. Millions of upstate New Yorkers feel disenfranchised and many are so disillusioned that they simply don’t vote.In the deep red states, like TN, Democrats in the cities and in the rural areas feel disenfranchised, they know that the popular vote for President and Vice President is meaningless.Perhaps you have not noticed, Ben but we now refer to the United States of America as a singular proper noun – for example, we can say “The United States leads the world in consumer consumption.” We would not say, “The United States lead the world in consumer consumption. I know that you are a secessionist, Ben, but that romantic notion is not an option today.

By: BenDover on 12/31/69 at 6:00

I've said several times that if we bankrupt out the US government it probably wouldn't be a bad thing. The states would get together and form a new confederation or the like for national security and other essentials and we could wipe the slate clean. Simple free trade agreements between the states would be much less complicated than the bloated federal bureaucracy we suffer now. The Democratic Republic of Tennessee... sounds good to me!

By: BenDover on 12/31/69 at 6:00

Let's cut out the largely non-value-added federal government and let the necessary government grow from the bottom up at the city and state level where the people have a greater say.

By: Loner on 12/31/69 at 6:00

Dragon, I think that you are correct on that. A US Constitutional Amendment would usurp that power from the states and judging from history and the current sleaze, I'd say that it is time for fundamental reform. If the feds can usurp a state's right to define "marriage

By: Captain Nemo on 12/31/69 at 6:00

As screwed up as Tennessee government is and Ben wants to stand alone? I hope you are jokeing. We would be overtaken by Georgia. They want our water.

By: Captain Nemo on 12/31/69 at 6:00

I never have liked term limits. It is the people right to vote.

By: Loner on 12/31/69 at 6:00

Ben, what are you smokin’? It seems that you don’t agree with the “One nation…. Indivisible” part of the Pledge of Allegiance. Over 618,000 soldiers and sailors died in the War Between the States, do you have contempt for their sacrifice? United, we stand – divided, we are toast.Gotta go now, I posted a new journal entry dedicated to this board; here's the URL:http://new-york-loner.livejournal.com/21239.htmlPlease visit and chat.

By: girliegirl on 12/12/08 Ok, in defense of Bredesen... The man bleeds "frugal" blood, seriously, as I've witnessed him shopping in the past. He compares pricing, availability, and then surfs the NET for a better deal. Or at least that was what he did back a few years ago. At least he's not selling a Senate seat on Ebay...yet~ ...girliegirl:You saw the governor spending his OWN MONEY not OUR money. There seems to be a big difference. First off, he managed to spend, with the help of some local governments in Hamilton county, $577 million dollars on 13,477 jobs(according to Dr, Fox). That represents the loss of all manufacturing jobs in the state of Tennessee for a period of about 471 days. These jobs won't be on line until at least 2011. More manufacturing jobs will be lost while we are waiting than will be gained by the subsidy. The governors Department of Economic and Community Development is claiming to have created about 3 out of every 8 jobs in the state since 2003. Some of the "created" jobs were just moved around from some where else like Anaheim, California. He decided to skip the legal requirements to get a legal subsidy for the headquarters move in the case of VW and just by a wave of a hand treat the movement of anyone into the VW plant as if it were a headquarters move. Nothing on a federal, state or local level has ever stopped or slowed down the loss of industrial jobs since 1979. No subsidy or special privilege like being able to condemn land for industrial purposes and alleged industrial purposes has stopped the job losses in this sector of the economy. One of the justifications for building this party bunker was so the wining and dining to put together deals like the VW subsidy fiasco could be facilitated. This governor has presided over the greatest waste of local tax money in the US by approving every local effort to buy speculative real estate for the next whiz bang industrial park. There are at least 86 square miles of these speculative land deals on the state web site, all with government money financing them. Local Governments are spending at least $33 million per year just in payments for the land. There are over 78 million square feet of empty industrial or warehouse floor space being advertised by the state as possible locations for the next factory. This money could go to traditional public safety or education instead. If a Republican Governor allowed this they would say he was against the children.

Hello. I did not get home until after mid-night and was up and on the run at 5 this morning. Ben You still out there or are you out there.lolI'm going to Loner's blog.

By: BenDover on 12/31/69 at 6:00

Only since the 14th amendment has the US government has supremacy over the states, loner. This amendment, with the stated intention of assuring ex-slaves a representative voice, has been exploited to enforce federal legislation over the once-sovereign states. This combined with the 16th amendment has undone much very careful intention by the founders to limit the federal government's scope and power.

By: gdiafante on 12/31/69 at 6:00

Yeah, but he saved the Preds. Duh!
