Letters to the Editor

Let him take his time

It appears a lot of weight is placed on the newly elected President, and the greatest stress test is billed as the "First 100 Days."

President Obama started getting excoriated by the rank and file GOP within Day 30, and certainly by Day 50. Rush Limbaugh wanted him to "fail" before Day 60.

He's closed in on his 100-day report card, and by all Republican accounts, will get a failing grade across the board. I think they'll even give him a "F" in gym.

Seems to me a more fair approach to critiquing a new President is a time frame of one year. Especially if he or she follows a "two-termer," as Obama has. The momentum of the actions the prior administration has accomplished or ruined, will overtake the new administration for a lot longer span than 100 days.

It took G.W. Bush almost his entire first term to destroy Bill Clinton's budget surplus. And halfway thru his second to ruin America's reputation around the world with needless invasions and wars, the sanctioning of torture, unwarranted wiretaps and infringing on American rights.

To be fair, give Obama more time to flex his political skills and show America the true leader they overwhelmingly voted for.

This guy sure writes a lot of brilliant letters.

By: idgaf on 4/28/09 at 4:57

People that think we are getting all that barry is doing for nothing are fools.

By: Loner on 4/28/09 at 5:27

Good morning, Nashville!

I like the cartoon, it's well drawn and truthful. Let's hope that the swine flu threat is just hype and hysteria.

This LTE is good, but it is a recycled missive, must be that there is a shortage of literate citizens in Music City. Again, daKine7 is right there with an early compliment. Paul, your cover has been blown, by you.yourself. Why change usernames?

Id, it takes one to know one.

By: daKine7 on 4/28/09 at 5:40

Loner: I always get pleasure by blowing myself...does that make sense?

By: house_of_pain on 4/28/09 at 5:47

Ummmm, yeah...makes perfect sense.
I think my razorback tattoo has the swine flu.

By: slacker on 4/28/09 at 6:03

Groundhog day?

By: daKine7 on 4/28/09 at 6:06

LaMaison d'pain: My wolverine gave your razorback the virus. Michigan will find a way to win, fair or unfair.

By: Dragon on 4/28/09 at 7:14

I'm surprised Paul doesn't think Obama has accomplished enough to be graded on. He is in control of the 19 largest banks, in control of the American auto industry, and is very close to having the energy and health care industry.

North Korea has stopped talking and is restarting their nuclear program. Iran is very close to producing nuclear bombs. Pakistan is in danger of Taliban control.

I don't think we can wait another nine months and then give a progress report.

By: house_of_pain on 4/28/09 at 7:16

d7, I hear there's a 12 step program for that.
It does involve stuffing buckeyes in your anus, though.

By: BenDover on 4/28/09 at 7:30

Obama is Jimmy Carter Redux. Sadly many people, including Obama and Jimmy Carter think that’s a compliment.

By: pandabear on 4/28/09 at 7:40

Why do give a rat's behind what those from the
"Land of Limbaugh" think.
It's just regurgitated pablum, disgusting in it's non-thinking
shallowness and false righteousness.

The sad part is that they get to ride the boat out of the waters
right along with us, complaining all the way,
and never have to say "thank you".

By: Citizen on 4/28/09 at 7:51

Was I caught in a time warp, or is this the second time for this particular Letter To The Editor?

DRAGON: Right on. I don't know for sure, but I'd say it's a good bet that the 100 days timeline is something started by the demlib friendly press, possiby during JFK's term. If we wait a full year for a report card, we'll have a full-scale politbureau answering to comrade Obama while comrades d'argent, dakine7, loner, algore, et al will be running things and the United States will be added to the trash heap of failing socialist governments.

By: Citizen on 4/28/09 at 7:54

P'BEAR: A "thank you" for destroying our country?? What are you smoking? With your policies, the boat ride will be not only "out of the water", but through the air over the waterfalls onto the rocks below...

By: 2476 on 4/28/09 at 7:59

Argo.. His report card began the day he was elected and it is now the end of the first semester and Obama gets an F, simply because he has failed. As Dragon has mentioned in his post , many of his failures, but he promised that he would end the war in Iraq (F) , stock market lower (F) more people out of work than when he took office (F) moral of the American people at an all time low (F) allowing Nancy Peeloser and Harry "nitwit" Reid run the country and call the shots, (F) . The largest amount of spending in 100 days, than ever before, (F) allowing 10% of stimulus spending to be hook to fraud and payoffs and bonuses (F). Going around the world bowing to other countries, (F), siding up with dictators and terrorists who hate this country (F).
Only thing we can see by waiting a year is for the (F) to become a (F-).

By: BenDover on 4/28/09 at 8:03

The Obama... first 100 days:

By: daKine7 on 4/28/09 at 8:08

Citizen: You ARE in fact living a "Twlight Zone" episode. When you slip the editor a $20. they'll publish anything....even twice.

By: TN4th on 4/28/09 at 8:12

Obama inherited crises on every front, some unprecedented, and has moved calmly and responsibly on each one. He has stayed in touch with the American people and made himself available to the press. He has been candid that these problems will not be solved overnight, and that solutions may not be all that clear. If these problems were easy, they would be solved already. How silly it is to complain that he hasn't solved in 100 days issues that took 8 years to create?

The hysterics coming from the increasingly marginalized and self-flagellating fundamentalist right no longer carry any sway with the vast majority of Americans, who elected by a large margin the man who is doing exactly what he campaigned to do.

By: daKine7 on 4/28/09 at 8:14

LaMaison d'pain: I cannot believe this paper let's a word like "anus" thru it's hysterical society of the vernacular. At least my ex-wife always referrs to me as an "ass-hole". More proper ettique.

By: daKine7 on 4/28/09 at 8:19

2476: Very well, indeed. At least he, unlike GW Bush and his co-conspirators, cabal of corruption, haven't started any needless wars under false pretenses going for the Middle East's OIL. After all, it's only money Obama is spending. Not lives.

By: 2476 on 4/28/09 at 8:28

Argo.. Your statement about going for the oil in Iraq won't float, that was stated 8 1/2 years ago and hasn't happened as of yet. Lives, in Chicago alone in the past 8 years, more lives were lost to killings than in the war in Iraq. As always your statements are based on things way in the past and not in the present. Your problem is you are an ultra liberal and cannot handle the truth.

By: BenDover on 4/28/09 at 8:28

You can look at it that way TN4th. Another thing to consider though is that the economy dried up in anticipation of The Obama. The S&P drop tracks exactly to Obama's rise in the polls and his popularity with the public. When the expected winner of the US presidential race is running around saying we need higher income taxes and we need to double the Capital gains tax rate out of 'fairness' and that he's going to bankrupt the coal energy industry and impose Cap and Trade that could double energy costs and he’s going to re-write NAFTA... well wary investors and business people are wan to hibernate.

Combine this with the fact that since being elected The Obama has done only things to confirm that he actually believes the populist pabulum upon which he was elected; and suddenly every economist's worst fears are realized.

Worse... The Obama has used the economic down-turn as an excuse to pass a litany of social reforms (as well as alowing congress to gorge on pork) amounting to just a populist wish-list the likes of nothing we’ve ever seen in this country before (see chart above) that will have no immediate effect on the economy because the spending is 2 - 3 years out.

By: slacker on 4/28/09 at 8:28

I think dargent, has a full size, blow up, anatomically correct, Obama doll, that he has been dating for 100 days.

By: Blanketnazi2 on 4/28/09 at 8:44

slacker, it'd still beat being screwed by the Bush puppet for the last 8 years.

By: BenDover on 4/28/09 at 8:47

How have you been screwed by Bush BN?

By: slacker on 4/28/09 at 8:56

nazi, it bows, and came with a teleprompter.

By: Blanketnazi2 on 4/28/09 at 9:03

War crimes will be prosecuted, war criminals will be punished and it will be no defense to say, "I was just following orders." -- GW Bush in his March 2003 address to the nation.

I guess that only applies to folks outside of his administration, huh?

By: Captain Nemo on 4/28/09 at 9:03

Good morning.

The cartoon warns of more doom coming over the horizion. Somehow the pig looks a lot like Rush.

Great letter Paul and right on.

People that think we are getting all that barry is doing for nothing are fools.
As useual id does not get it. We are paying for the Bush blunder.

By: brrrrk on 4/28/09 at 9:23

You know, I swore that I wasn't going to get involved in all this mess today... but I just had to share this link....

I won't spoil it, it's a surprise!!! OK, I'll give you two hints, GOP and DUH!!!

Obama is Jimmy Carter Redux. Sadly many people, including Obama and Jimmy Carter think that’s a compliment.

Governor want to secede from the Union. Now Perry wants a handout from that very Union

BenDover thinks Perry is a great American and now Ben want to move to Texas.

By: BenDover on 4/28/09 at 9:30

What war crimes, bn?

By: Captain Nemo on 4/28/09 at 9:35

2476 has given Obama an F for his first 100 days in office.

I bet that this rat conservative has given Busg an A for all the time he was in office.

By: Fundit on 4/28/09 at 9:40

I have my doubts that 2476 was old enough to vote when Bush was in office...

By: Fundit on 4/28/09 at 9:42

"By: BenDover on 4/28/09 at 8:30

Obama is Jimmy Carter Redux. Sadly many people, including Obama and Jimmy Carter think that’s a compliment."

I hope by that you mean Bush redux would have been better. Surely not - but the only alternative.

By: BenDover on 4/28/09 at 9:43

A Bush 3rd term would have been better than Obama or McCain.

By: Captain Nemo on 4/28/09 at 9:45

I think 2476 was in a drug induced for eighty years and is still in it.

By: Blanketnazi2 on 4/28/09 at 9:46

"Now our reputation is shot, we are bankrupt, we continue to fight two wars that you started and the economy is in the worst recession since the Great Depression. And you have the temerity to go around criticizing those who replaced you? How dare you?"

By: Blanketnazi2 on 4/28/09 at 9:46

but yet Ben things a 3rd term would've been a great idea.

By: pandabear on 4/28/09 at 9:48

Have you got any recommendations on pocket guns ?
I've been looking at KelTec, Beretta and a few others
in the medium price category.

By: Captain Nemo on 4/28/09 at 9:51

By: BenDover on 4/28/09 at 10:43
A Bush 3rd term would have been better than Obama or McCain.

BenDover 4 Bush shows the world his stupid side.

Are you posting from Texas now. Or are you going to wait for the Texans to do all of the work before you make your move?

By: Loner on 4/28/09 at 9:52

Thank you, Citizen for including me in the list of folks who will be "running things".

I'd like the Postmaster General's job....I'll put a solar-powered paper shredder at each Post Office-provided delivery point (mailbox). Why schlep it into the hoiuse, when you can shred that bulk business mail (junk mail) right at the roadside? Can I get an Amen on that?

To Ben, Dragon, Citizen and the other sore losers: You ain't seen nuthin' yet!

Obama has been left with the biggest mess in Presidential history and the opposition party is doing everything it can to thwart his initiatives. When President Obama turns things around, in under four years, he will win in a landslide re-election. Start sizing this guy up for Mount Rushmore.

By: Blanketnazi2 on 4/28/09 at 9:52

pocket guns? i have no clue.

By: Captain Nemo on 4/28/09 at 9:55

Loner, that is a Big Amen.

By: house_of_pain on 4/28/09 at 10:02

Too bad we don't have a 'Do Not Mail' list.

By: Fundit on 4/28/09 at 10:04

arlen specter just changed sides! Cool!

By: gdiafante on 4/28/09 at 10:07

Sadly, economic recovery doesn't have the same agenda as politicians.

I'm now convinced that Paul is schizophrenic. Wasn't he preaching that Obama was a Communist a few weeks back? Now he's again the savior of humanity?

I'd say the accurate "grade" for Obama's first 100 days would be an incomplete. There are too many acute situations that have yet to play out. I know this will provide serious heartbreak for Ben and 2476, who seem emotionally invested in Obama's failure.

By: pandabear on 4/28/09 at 10:07

Thanks anyway.

By: pandabear on 4/28/09 at 10:09

I'm proclaiming today "Ignore the ignorant" day.

...so how 'bout them Titans ?....
