Reckless consumption

The stark contrast between our frenzied reaction to unfamiliar hazards and our reckless tolerance of familiar ones never ceases to amaze me.

The current incidence of swine flu, which killed some Americans, has captured the headlines, cancelled public events, and closed dozens of schools. At the same time, we have blithely continued our consumption of meat and dairy products, which has been linked conclusively with elevated risk of heart disease, stroke, cancer, diabetes, and other chronic diseases that kill 1.3 million Americans annually.

But it’s not just about chronic diseases. According to the United Nations, animal agriculture is responsible for 18 percent of greenhouse gas emissions, leading to catastrophic floods, droughts, and rising sea levels, which threaten human survival. It uses more fresh water and dumps more deadly wastes into our water supplies than all other human activities combined.

Each of us has a shared responsibility for our society’s health and welfare. The best time to exercise this responsibility is on our next trip to the supermarket, where we can explore the rich variety of meat-free and dairy-free ready-to-eat frozen dinners, veggie burgers and dogs, lunch “meats,” and plant-based cheese, ice cream, and milk.

Burger King might be able to sell Carbon Credits since they are killing people who are breathing CO2 into the air. Abortion clinics ought to get a heck of a Carbon Credit. Abortions could be free if the size of the credit was substantially above the cost of the abortion, Taxpayers would then be less involved with proceedures that are morally questionable. We could give Carbon Credits for parents that agree to have genetically inferior children that would have a shortened life expectancy. Instead of genetic testing to avoid damaged children, damaged children would be the new moral imperative. We could get a Carbon Credit for pulling the plug on Granny a little sooner than later. It ought to be at least worth a credit on the hospital bill. How much could we save by taking out a lung? This Carbon Credit Thing seems to change everything.

I was with you up until you said, "plant based ice cream"...Ben & Jerry's and Hagen Daz are life's little pleasures. Soy milk makes me gag, kinda like this forum. Meat eaters might die 10 years earlier than vegetarians, but they seem to have a smile on their faces once in the coffin.

Good morning.

I thought we did this last mounth.

I am old and old people produce greenhouse gas emissions. Should old people feel threaten?

By: house_of_pain on 5/29/09 at 5:54

When I saw the description of this LTE, I thought I knew who the author would be.
My bad, d7. It's good to see you're not a total veggie nut.
I've tried some of the products mentioned. Two words: NAS TEE.

By: dargent7 on 5/29/09 at 6:03

d'pain: If I could afford it, I'd shop exclusively at Whole Foods. When I go the salad bar and get loaded up, the freekin' thing cost's $18.95. Plus odds and ends, the cashier wants a bank statement. I could hire Emeril Lagasse to come to my house as my personal chef for less than my bill at that place. But, tofu is one thing, soy ice cream, soy milk, and soy cheese are against the teachings of the Catholic church I railed against last week.

By: dargent7 on 5/29/09 at 6:13

Cpt: I've heard about your "emmissions". The half life alone from your carbon will last until 2125.

By: Captain Nemo on 5/29/09 at 6:37

d7, I have had to move twice in the last mounth, but it is nothing compared to what is coming from the fringe right wing.

By: house_of_pain on 5/29/09 at 6:46

Bredesen vetoed the guns in restaurants bill.
This could be the end of my dream to open a 'Shoot Your Own Dinner' franchise.

By: gdiafante on 5/29/09 at 6:57

Good for Bredesen. It will likely be symbolic only, but at lease someone has some sense.

By: Captain Nemo on 5/29/09 at 7:00

Another shattered dream for house.

By: Captain Nemo on 5/29/09 at 7:02

I agree gdia.

By: dargent7 on 5/29/09 at 7:15

d'pain in LaMaison: Saw it on TV. No, not naked pictures of your wife this time, but the Gov. vetoeing the "Guns in Bars" bill. Couldn't believe it. Next is in parks.
The White Supremacist's are besides them selves.

By: Loner on 5/29/09 at 7:20

Good morning, Nashville!

Still holed up in Massena, on the St. Lawrence River, using a borrowed PC.

The LTE is well-written, but unconvincing. The meat industry stinks and I eat as little meat as I can. The soy-based, meat-wannabe stuff needs work.

Just because plants have cell walls and don't vocalize doesn't meant that they are happy to be ripped out of the ground, processed and ingested. What about the botanical right to exist and plant-based right to life?

There is only one plant known to mankind that actually enjoys being harvested, dried and used - Cannabis. That is it's mission in life, to ameliorate the suffering and to mitigate the nastiness.

Back to work...see ya later!

By: Captain Nemo on 5/29/09 at 7:27

Loner is correct about plant life. From this day on, I will not mow my yard.

By: gdiafante on 5/29/09 at 7:37

If Loner is correct about plants, I am personally responsible for genocide when I removed a complete row of hedges and then rented a chipper...my god...

By: Dragon on 5/29/09 at 7:54

OMG, I trimmed the bushes and mowed the lawn. I must be guilty of torture.

By: chiefpayne568 on 5/29/09 at 8:02

Nemo,

"I am old and old people produce greenhouse gas emissions. Should old people feel threaten?"

Ever seen Logan's Run?

By: chiefpayne568 on 5/29/09 at 8:03

Dragon,

"OMG, I trimmed the bushes and mowed the lawn. I must be guilty of torture."

Just look at it like this, you're doing your part to reduce the CO2 in the air!

By: gdiafante on 5/29/09 at 8:04

No Dragon, we cannot take your word for it, we must have evidence. We would need to appoint a special investigator to recover the remains of the bushes and grass and then proceed according to the rule of law.

But, there are rumors that you posed for pictures while trimming, you sick bastard.

By: chiefpayne568 on 5/29/09 at 8:04

Dragon,

OOPS! That took out O2! Guess that didn't help at all. Humm...maybe killing livestock will atone???

By: chiefpayne568 on 5/29/09 at 8:05

Gdia,

Now that is fair. I concur.

By: pandabear on 5/29/09 at 8:06

house:
The nerve of that guy to kill your dreams like that.

...and you, a taxpaying citizen too !

By: gdiafante on 5/29/09 at 8:07

That's why I rented a chipper...although there are stumps remaining!

I would have gotten away with it if it weren't for you meddling kids...

By: pandabear on 5/29/09 at 8:07

chief:
Looks like Bredeson's gonna get his first veto over ridden in 6 years.

By: chiefpayne568 on 5/29/09 at 8:15

Panda,

That's interesting. Should be pretty telling to see who votes to override and who doesn't.

By: house_of_pain on 5/29/09 at 8:20

The Gov. acts like it's a bad idea to shoot tequila & a pistol at the same time.

By: pandabear on 5/29/09 at 8:21

That's right.

...and I went to the link that Dragon had. That Soto lady is off
her rocker. All the rights in the Bill of Rights are protected under
the 14th ammendment EXCEPT the right to bears arms ?!?

That's beyond liberal. That's just a total disregard to our foundations.

Well, one thing is for sure...North Korea is certainly testing Obama, just like Biden said would happen during the campaign.

North Korea fires sixth missile and restarts nuclear plant
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/asia/northkorea/5391248/North-Korea-fires-sixth-missile-and-restarts-nuclear-plant.html

Wonder if Korea will now be Obama's new war?

By: house_of_pain on 5/29/09 at 8:22

BTW, I can give you guys the name of a good 'lawn hitman' if you feel guilty doing
it yourselves.

By: pandabear on 5/29/09 at 8:22

...just don't shoot the tequila with the pistol...

By: chiefpayne568 on 5/29/09 at 8:22

House,

Shooting a pistol and tequila at the same time? Is that anything like shooting your mouth off?

By: pandabear on 5/29/09 at 8:23

No chief. Just because there's a war, doesn't mean
we have to go there.

Let Korea's neighbors take care of this one.

By: slacker on 5/29/09 at 8:26

They'll have to pry my gun, from the hand that's not holding my beer.

By: chiefpayne568 on 5/29/09 at 8:26

Panda,

Yeah, I heard about Sotomayer saying the states didn't have to obey the Second Amendment. That, of course, opens the door to to not obeying the other nine as well as any other amendment...which would lead to the states disobeying any federal law period.

Yeah, this lady is really what we need on the SCOTUS bench!

By: gdiafante on 5/29/09 at 8:40

I think we need a whoopee cushion on the bench myself...

By: slacker on 5/29/09 at 8:44

Those judges should at least wear transparent robes, who knows what they are doing under there.

By: chiefpayne568 on 5/29/09 at 8:46

Gdia,

A whoopee sushion would probably sound a whole lot better too

By: chiefpayne568 on 5/29/09 at 8:47

Slacker,

Oh NO...have you SEEN the judges?! I do NOT want tranparent robes on the justices. Now transparent justices...that would work for me.

By: gdiafante on 5/29/09 at 8:55

I know what's in their robes...it's the contents of Al Capone's vault.

I'm sending a case of fluorescent light bulbs to Iraq, to support the troops. Anybody wanta chip in?

By: gdiafante on 5/29/09 at 9:08

No thanks slacker, I already sent some body armour and season one DVD of "Deadwood"...

By: chiefpayne568 on 5/29/09 at 9:09

Slacker,

Now why would you want to send them to Iraq? I thought President Obama would have us out of there in another 7 more months.

Seems to me it would be a waste of time for you to send them there. You'd probably do better to send them to Afghanistan.

By: slacker on 5/29/09 at 9:10

They never should have canceled ''Deadwood''.

By: gdiafante on 5/29/09 at 9:11

You got that right slacker...they always cancel the good ones.

By: chiefpayne568 on 5/29/09 at 9:12

I guess they figured it just wasn't worth the trouble to prosecute them.
