Number 1 and Number 2
The daily revelations of the secrecy and misdeeds of Dick Cheney and Donald Rumsfeld without any constitutional authority to do any of it reminds me of the Austin Powers movie adventures with Cheney and Rumsfeld closely paralleling "Dr. Evil" (for Cheney, note the actual resemblance) and Number 2, his comrade in crime.
[We’ll leave the role of Mini Me to a confused President Bush who was not even cognizant of anything that was going on.]
This Bush mob has stained our country forever and their comedic evil can in no way can ever be considered funny as the Austin Powers movies were intended to be. Enough has already been revealed that war crimes trials should on the table, but it seems that the American people don't stand much of a chance at receiving justice.
President Obama should insist that the justice department proceed in that direction. If not, it will be hard to proceed into the future with hope or any kind of standards if the crimes of the past are allowed to evaporate for the sake of moving ahead.

Ah but you see, there's no way a baby could walk to soldiers to blow them up. Now a baby could be left on the road with a bomb underneath it...but the soldiers wouldn't touch it. They know better. They would call it in to the back and have the locals come and get it. You see, that way the Afghans wouldn't set it off...they don't want to kill locals, unless they can get Americans too.
So your scenario doesn't wash. Sorry. Want to try again? Maybe with a little kid or something? 5 or 6 year old? You see, we'd treat the kid the same as adults and have them wait to the rear, drop to their knees, show us the inside of their robes- all before coming forward.

Just a regular soldier...one that is more human, like all the others, than you care to admit. But then, I believe you've said you've never been a soldier...so one cannot expect you to know this.

Thanks for your's and Blanket's humor. I was going mental from bitch- slapping "Chief" all morning on this Afghanistan war. Now, America has to "free the Afghani people"? These tribes have been around for 5,000 years. We've f**ked up our society in less than 230 years. The USA is the Wal*Mart of corrupting a civilization in record time. And, at 10cents on the dollar.

I think I know more about what happens in a combat zone than any civilian who's never been in one but who like to be the armchair quarterback for an army.

Ok...a Three year old then.
Three year old are old enough to know the word stop or go back in their own language. We have interpreters around at all times at all ECPs (that's Entry Control Points) and on all convoys. If the kid doesn't go back, then we do what we have to.
So are you saying we're less than human for that? If so, you've never been on a battlefield. You have seconds to make a decision...and you deal with and take responsibility for your actions. That's what it means to be a soldier.

True, but you don't see anything perverse about our rabid consumerism? Houses full of Walmart crap that we neither want nor need but manage to buy anyway? In fact, the whole "keep up with the Jones" thing is to program our society to keep buying useless crap and ruining the environment in doing so?

No you didn't...but you keep trying to find an scenario in which we have no choice but to shoot a child. See, that doesn't happen unless absolutely necessary. A lot of guys didn't do it anyway and were killed because of it.
A one year old could be lethal if a bomb were strapped to it...but like I said, it would have to have some way of coming to you. You can also get out of the way of the child too, if you suspect it has one. We don't automatically assume all children coming up have bombs on them. Most of the time they just want to see if we have candy.
Point is, higher headquarters will not tell you to shoot a civilian in any way. It is the job of the senior person on the ground to direct troops, as they have the closest view of what's going on. And frankly, they won't do it until AFTER the interpreter had done everything they can to get the child to stop.
You see, we have HAD scenarios like you suggest (well, close anyway) happen. We do learn from previous errors.

BTW, I may not know everything there is to know about war (who does?) but I am trained by the US military and I would hope I know more than civilians do about warfare.

Of course it doesn't...but we have to APPROACH the baby for it to kill us! Apparently YOU don't read very well. I SAID that if the baby doesn't walk, the best the terrorists could do would be to put a bomb on the baby, sit him out where we could find him and then hope we go up to him.
We would call back to HQ, have them contact a local villager and have THEM go to the baby. The terrorists, not getting any Americans, would be unlikely to kill a simple villager. That would just tick off the villagers at them.
My orders are to NOT kill unarmed noncombatants, INCLUDING babies! THAT is how it works. Sorry you aren't geting your bloodlust satisfied by me, but you'll have to look elsewhere.
