Music drowned out by talk

I read Rex Noseworthy's comments [Sept. 7] about WPLN-FM's choice of “Deutschland Uber Alles” as a portion of the music for Sept. 1. Please tell Rex that he won't have to worry about their music any longer.

They dropped music from their FM station's daytime formatting.

I have been listening to WPLN since I was in high school in the 1970s. I have been a member since about 1984. I now am one of a number of unhappy members.

How 'bout them Titans?

By: Kosh III on 9/11/09 at 5:23

It's pathetic. We are supposed to be "Music City" but not one dedicated classical music radio station; jazz and blues are hardly any better. Instead we get blabbermouths and repetitive top 40 junk not worth listening to.

By: house_of_pain on 9/11/09 at 5:30

We had the greatest rock station in the world until KDF underwent genre reassignment.

By: dargent7 on 9/11/09 at 5:42

I have to say, the Nashville radio "dial" is the lamest I've ever heard. Billed as "Music City", we should have a 24/7 Classical and Jazz stations. Detroit, 25 years ago, had WQRS for classical, WJZZ for jazz, WKNR for pop, WLLZ for rock, WABX for rock, and a third rock station who's letters escape me. (too much acid, I guess).

The best station we every had was Phoenix. Too progressive for Nashville. Why is there more talk radio?

By: dnewton on 9/11/09 at 6:28

It sounds like most of the complaints about the radio formats is coming after the government fixed an alleged ownership problem. I finally switched to XM radio because the low power stations that were created failed to deliver a consistent and interesting product while driving long distances. On XM, the talk radio is mixed with commercials.
Some of the best talk radio, before it got political, was in Atlanta. Ludow Porch used to interview himself when things got slow. One day he pretended to be a federal official who was investigating a local problem with marriage certificates. It seems that there were a lot of people in Atlanta that had been victimized by incompetent local county court clerks who had improperly posted marriage licenses and those poor folks, legions of them, were not really married. It was a hoot. We would have to wait for Phil Hendry before such hoaxing would ever eclipse Ludlow Porch. Mr. Porch caught Hell for that and promised never to do it again.

By: sidneyames on 9/11/09 at 6:59

dnewton that sounds funny! Wish I had heard it.

Poor House, Titans lost. It's only one game...there's 15 more...I'd rather finish strong anyway (coming from a Cowboys fan, that's a pipe dream).

By: gdiafante on 9/11/09 at 7:08

Once you go XM, you never go back. I've never understood why anyone would rather listen to talk radio anyway...it's just spoon-feeding you an opinion...pathetic people calling in begging for some form of validation...ridiculous format...but people seem to like it...weird.

I got a topic for today: the 9/11 8th year anniversary. Chief of Staff Andy Card is replaying his telling GW Bush that "America is under attack". As he (Bush) was reading "My Pet Goat" to 4th graders, he sat there spellbound. Look at the idiot's expression. He DID NOT KNOW WHAT TO DO. Card "spins" Bush's lack of reaction that he was "impressed with the President's thoughtfulness". How sweet.

I find it amusing that they are surprised the charitable contributions from their rich alumini (key word here is RICH) have dropped. When people with wealth are told their taxes are going up and they may have to pay more in other ways to pay for new things the government wants to do...and when they are basically afraid of what their government is going to do next, they have a tendency to hang onto their money.

And in doing so, one of the FIRST things to go is charitable contributions.

Gdia,

Hummm...and yet the rich are SO rich that their taxes should be raised and they should be paying more for healthcare. So why should they bother saving?

By: chiefpayne568 on 9/11/09 at 7:40

Well, it looks like this is coming to a head!

ACORN Workers Face Charges of Alleged Voter Registration Fraud in Florida

The FBI and state authorities were making arrests Wednesday of workers hired to register voters by the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now, or ACORN.

Good Morning

The lost of classic music from WPLN is most distruping for me. Driving on the streets of Nashville the classic has been a sources of claming my nerves. No more Nashville.

By: dargent7 on 9/11/09 at 7:43

Chief: ACORN is late to the party. Voter fraud was invented, perfected, and initiated by Bush & Co. in 2000. Save your weak breath.

By: gdiafante on 9/11/09 at 7:47

As usual Chief, your ass backwards. The rich can afford healthcare, it's everyone else that can't.

Pay attention.

Dargent,

And here I thought you didn't like voter fraud in any form. Guess that's just any that has an R next to it.

By: BenDover on 9/11/09 at 7:52

I think I'll keep it light today and try not to argue politics... in respect for those lost in the 9/11 attacks.

Did anyone else have that sick feeling in the pit of your stomach when you heard the 2nd tower was hit and realized that it wasn't an accident? And when the buildings crashed down... OMG... it was horrible.

By: dargent7 on 9/11/09 at 7:54

Captain N: The true secret for calming your nerves on the streets of Nashville is to pack "heat". You could start a movement like the "Guardian Angels". Go to all the bars and honkey-tonks and wait for trouble to break out. Pick on a "Hell's Angel". Now, that's real calming.

By: chiefpayne568 on 9/11/09 at 7:55

Gdia,

"As usual Chief, your ass backwards. The rich can afford healthcare, it's everyone else that can't."

And so the rich must pay for those who can't...regardless of whether they want to or not. Got it. But if they can afford everything they want, then WHY do they need to save anything...they're rich right? So let them pay for healthcare AND send charitable contributions to Harvard and Yale. After all, that's where most of our politicians come from!

So...why aren't they ponying up? Maybe the President needs to add a College Education tax to the healthcare bill, so the rich will not be so greedy and will be forced to pay for college tuition too...after all, they can afford it and everyone else can't right?

God, you are so freakin' ridiculous... Gdifante, no Chief Payne is correct. Wealthy people got that way be knowing how and when to spend and when to "donate' and they know when to cut back. I'm middle class (income-wise) and cut my donations down because I think the gov-ment is going to raise taxes and I need to take care of my family first. BenD, I had a sick feeling when I saw the first tower; never mind the 2nd, the Pentegon and the field in PA. OMG! Yeah, it's time to focus on the ones who survived with the horror of it and the ones who lost their lives and their surviving families. Good point.

Speaking freakin'ridicous. sid has chief as her boy toy.

By: chiefpayne568 on 9/11/09 at 8:09

Dargent,

Well now, not really. If you are referring to the US Supreme Court taking a hand in it, it was within their perview to do so, as this was affecting the federal government. Sec. Harris was doing her job, per the Florida State Constitution to declare the election over. It was the Florida State Supreme Court who refused to follow their own State Constitution. And even after Bush took it to the SCOTUS, the justices there tried to send it back down to the Florida Supreme Court with a nice message telling them to do their jobs and read their own Constitution. When they failed a second time to do their jobs and it was returned to the SCOTUS, the justices finally decided to do their job for them.

That, in a nutshell, is what happened in 2000.

By: gdiafante on 9/11/09 at 8:10

"And so the rich must pay for those who can't...regardless of whether they want to or not."

Um...that's the problem with the current system, we're all paying for those who can't, those who use ER's as their PCP...whether we want to or not. But that's ok, just as long as the rich aren't burdened...sounds like you suffer from rich penis envy.

By: dargent7 on 9/11/09 at 8:11

Bend-O: Oh, save the sentiment for another time. You supported the Iraqi war that has killed 4,350 US American soldiers. 9/11 killed 2,800. Can you do the math or do you need your hand held and diapers changed?

By: chiefpayne568 on 9/11/09 at 8:12

BTW, if Congress can mandate that you WILL buy health insurance, or get on a public option - or face fines...then what is to prevent them from mandating that you WILL buy a new car every year or face other fines?

The principle is the same and it WOULD bail out the automotive industry quite well too.

By: dargent7 on 9/11/09 at 8:15

Chief: Like nutshells, do we? Bush's brother was Jeb, Gov. of FL. Harris was a rabid right wing GOP Attorney General of FL. The US Supreme Court was slanted to the right. Do you think there was any way, in the given "tie" with Gore, Bush was going to loose? Ever been to Vegas? It's called the "odds" on favorite.

By: chiefpayne568 on 9/11/09 at 8:15

Gdia,

"Um...that's the problem with the current system, we're all paying for those who can't, those who use ER's as their PCP...whether we want to or not. But that's ok, just as long as the rich aren't burdened...sounds like you suffer from rich penis envy."

And so instead, we will pay for everyone's health care and preventative health care and will add additional government buerocracy to otherwise gummed up buerocracy which already exists...and the cost will go higher than ever. But that won't be a problem, because the rich will pay for it, right?

BTW, have you noticed how a lot of people with money are bailing out from California because of extremely high taxes? Now take that to a national scale.

The right wing can't admit that Iraq was a stupid act and by going into Iraq, Osama is still alive and has gotten away with murder.

Thinks to Bush lack of leadership.

So you are telling me that Harris didn't do her job? Sorry but according to the Florida State Constitution she DID do her job...whether you like the way she did it or not.

The SCOTUS was slanted to the right? Ok...did that make their ruling unjust or illegal? Sorry but nope, that won't wash either.

Look, regardless of whether you liked the way things turned out or not, everything WAS done in a legal and proper manner.

By: gdiafante on 9/11/09 at 8:18

Here's a question: The Wild Bunch or Reservoir Dogs?

By: chiefpayne568 on 9/11/09 at 8:19

Gdia,

"The sky is falling chief, you better run and hide"

Actually no it's not...because I seriously doubt this bill will make it to Obama's desk. Pelosi isn't willing to compromise on the public option and too many won't vote for it with that in there.

So...it's looking more like the system we have will remain in place.

By: chiefpayne568 on 9/11/09 at 8:20

I have to agree with Gdia on this one!
