Out from behind the 8-ball

Well, so far so good. The infamous, ‘Guns in Bars’ law passed in July, serving as a complete embarrassment to Tennessee state lawmakers who made the rounds on television talk shows.

Attempting to explain why it was essential gun advocates and permit carriers needed to ‘carry’ at IHOP during Sunday's buffet. No violence has yet to break out at Shoney's either.

Lawmakers side-stepping the law that says a gun permit carrier cannot drink while at the bar. There’s even an Einsteinian equation available to contemplate while getting loaded that 50 percent of the restaurant’s profits need to come from “food.”

Now the law will be re-examined this November. So, again we can listen to why Tennesseans’ feel the need to pack heat while dining with friends and family.

Is the “South” behind the 8-ball and times? Naw.

Nashville is the most dangerous city I have ever lived in so I'd pack heat no matter where I was.
Nashville breeds crime, it's a way of life that's ignored.

You don't get out much do you eastnasty? You must come from the boondocks.

eastnasty is a good example of why this law was passed. A super-paranoia freak that see it's shadow as a mugger.

What type of wine goes best with a .38 special?

By: dargent7 on 9/24/09 at 5:57

Pain: I cannot believe you don't know. A Chardonnay.
Now, with a Glock, (with full clip) the obvious choice is a Cabernet.
If you had to plug the valet and busboy for taking a quick glance at your wife, then a Merlot.

By: Captain Nemo on 9/24/09 at 5:58

If I start packing heat, it want be for the bad guys. It will be because of the fruit loops that are afraid of their own shadow.

By: Kosh III on 9/24/09 at 6:07

Guns again?? Didn't we talk this one to death already?

What about this?

"the best vote that I cast, was my “no” vote to the $51.5 billion to [Hurricane] Katrina. That probably was my best vote"

I heard that the next round of gun bills will be that you can take your gun to work legally. That way when you go postal you don't have to go to the car and get your gun.

By: house_of_pain on 9/24/09 at 6:34

That will be a time-saver, Nemo.

By: dargent7 on 9/24/09 at 6:37

K-3: Guns..."talked to death". You do stand up Kosh, too?

By: Kosh III on 9/24/09 at 6:50

Will "workplace" include state offices and Legislative Plaza? How about the governor's office?

By: Loner on 9/24/09 at 6:50

Good morning, Nashville!

The LTE's are on rotation - God, Guns, Gays & HealthCare. Tomorrow is reserved for Gay issues, today it's Guns. I mean, seriously, what other issues get the Southern juices flowing? Everybody South of the Mason Dixon Line knows that Christ and the Disciples were all packin' heat at the Last Supper. And no, it was not just a gay men's banquet.

Paul is a transplant from Motown, but he knows how to stir it up. Rack up another score for our beloved D7.

By: dargent7 on 9/24/09 at 6:55

Loner: I'm currently working on my "gay" piece. It's a work in progress. I only lived in San Francisco for a year, so I'm a little rusty. I think it'll come back to me.

By: Loner on 9/24/09 at 7:18

I'm looking forward to your gay piece, Paul. It is rather queer that you, Dooley and Zizza represent 90% of the intellectual material available for exploitation.

Speaking of guns and folks who hate the "govmint", here is a link to a chilling story:

http://voices.washingtonpost.com/federal-eye/2009/09/eye_opener_census_worker_hange.html?hpid=moreheadlines

They found a US Census worker hanged in the Daniel Boone Forest in Kentucky - the word "FED" was scrawled across his chest. Sounds like the teabaggers bagged a federal worker...they're sending us a message.

The victim was a white man, 51 and just a part-timer. So it's not race-based...I guess. Where are we going as a nation? Prepare for mass denials of culpability from Rush, Beck, Savage, Hannity et al.

By: Dragon on 9/24/09 at 7:18

dargent, let me get you started.

To solve the gay marriage issue, what if we deleted all government recognition of marriage. No more special privileges or penalties. No more "married - filing jointly", etc.

By: Dragon on 9/24/09 at 7:21

Loner, the census worker was in the backwoods and probably strayed where he shouldn't. There are still areas of TN (eg, Tracy City) were you just don't go. Too many stills, marijuana farms, and meth labs.

By: Loner on 9/24/09 at 7:28

That could explain it, Dragon; but why put the body & "mesage" on display and attract national media attention to your still, meth lab or Cannabis? The victim was a Boy Scut leader and himself an Eagle Scout, seems like he should have known how to behave in the woods. This happened on the 12th, where has the MSM been on this one? This case sure looks like a hate crime....we shall see.

By: house_of_pain on 9/24/09 at 7:31

Dragon, I have yet to see any kind of tax break just for being married.
Whether my wife & I file jointly or not, it adds up to the same amount.

By: Loner on 9/24/09 at 7:32

The victim was hanged, not shot. Will the authorities restrict rope sales?

By: pandabear on 9/24/09 at 7:34

loner:
only that TYPE of rope

By: gdiafante on 9/24/09 at 7:35

Good Dragon, blame the victim. Nice.

By: Loner on 9/24/09 at 7:35

I agree, House, filing jointly or seperately makes little difference these days, or so my tax guy claims. Me, I file jointly - I roll a big doobie and put my return in the mailstream. It all goes up in smoke....let it go.

By: Dragon on 9/24/09 at 7:48

I've looked at filing jointly vs filing separately. The tables are different to avoid the "marriage penalty" where the second income would be subject to the higher ,progressive, rates. I would have to rationalize whether the wife's income would disqualify her as my dependent. She might even qualify for that free money (earned income tax credit).

I'm just suggesting a think-piece. The libertarian view would be to get the government out of the habit of using taxes as a social engineering tool.

By: Blanketnazi2 on 9/24/09 at 7:49

east, Nashville is the most dangerous city you've ever lived in? wow, you really don't get out much, do you?

By: Kosh III on 9/24/09 at 7:50

pain
You and your wife have extra rights when it comes to Social Security and inheritance, just to name two special rights that gay couples don't have.

By: house_of_pain on 9/24/09 at 7:53

Google ads for bulletproof vests. Nice touch.

By: dargent7 on 9/24/09 at 7:53

Dragon: I'm not really "gay" or even favor "gay" rights, including marriage. I just play that role in this forum.
Nazix2: East Nashville is like Disney World compared to Flint, Michigan. I rarely venture over the bridge after the sun goes down, but "The Turnip Truck" has great cillantro.

By: dargent7 on 9/24/09 at 7:54

K-3: I'll name one: RESPECT.

By: Blanketnazi2 on 9/24/09 at 7:54

you got that right, dargent. i lived in south Chicago. now THAT was dangerous.

By: pandabear on 9/24/09 at 7:55

Nashville is a dangerous town to live in.
Practically everyday there are murders and shootings.
There's even one in todays' City paper.
Maybe you guys have a crystal ball or something, like Paul obviously has,
that tells you, "This will never happen to me or my family".

I don't have Paul's crystal ball, and I know that bad guys can come
from anywhere at anytime, so I either have to be ready to stop him,
or I have to be ready to be a victim.
I could die either way, that's true. But I want a fighting chance for me and mine.

If you don't want the same chance, that's fine by me. It's your choice.
Just don't interfere with my choice and my chance.

Think about it this way. The criminal is going to carry a weapon and use
it anytime and anywhere he wants and he doesn't give a hoot about the
law. He's a coward, so he doesn't want a fight and only goes where
his victims are unarmed, like public parks where he knows everyone else is
unarmed (because it's posted).

The legally carrying citizen, on the other hand, trains, practices, gives money
to the state, gives his prints to the feds and state and puts all he has
on the line. He respects the law, is pretty polite (I've found most gun people
to be very polite and respectful...except me of course :),
and only wants to live in peace (not pieces).

By: MamaG on 9/24/09 at 8:02

Eastern KY is a lonely, desolate place to be. I could easily imagine someone being strung up there.

By: Blanketnazi2 on 9/24/09 at 8:04

panda, most of the shootings and murders are by people the victim knows.

By: house_of_pain on 9/24/09 at 8:05

Sounds like a confession to me.
Can you verify your whereabouts on Sept. 12, MamaG(if that is your real name)?

By: gdiafante on 9/24/09 at 8:06

You're paranoid Panda. I'm so glad that you are the exception rather than rule.

Now, excuse me, I need to get my weapon ready as I'm taking my kids to the park...pathetic.

By: Blanketnazi2 on 9/24/09 at 8:08

dargent, you need to check out the cilantro at Inner Asian. Last time I checked, it was very fresh and only .39/bunch.

By: MamaG on 9/24/09 at 8:09

panda, the gun law just makes it legal to do what the thugs already do. It's like having a get out of jail free card. Mark this down: violence will increase with this law.

By: Blanketnazi2 on 9/24/09 at 8:10

Mama also has a good point. If you notice how many people have their charges dismissed or reduced - this law allows violent people to legally carry concealed weapons.

By: MamaG on 9/24/09 at 8:11

I was home, eating dinner, alone.

By: house_of_pain on 9/24/09 at 8:11

Blanket, my Asian co-worker tells me the best Asian market is on Charlotte, close to White Bridge. He said it's next to the big-a$$ pink elephant.

By: Blanketnazi2 on 9/24/09 at 8:12

really? i need to check that out! thanks, house.

By: MamaG on 9/24/09 at 8:12

It also allows idiots to carry concealed weapons. I tell ya, if some of the bars I've been to had gun toters, there would have been lots of blood shed thru the years!

By: gdiafante on 9/24/09 at 8:12

I have taken my children to various parks every week for the past three and a half years (weather permitting) and have yet to see all this violence that necessitated this stupid legislation.

But we all know it's based in paranoia..."they're taking our guns away"

Kudos to local governments for voting it down. At least some government officials don't have their head up their ass.

By: Blanketnazi2 on 9/24/09 at 8:13

i've walked my two small dogs at various parks over the past 12 years and never once had an "incident" where i wish i'd had a gun.

By: gdiafante on 9/24/09 at 8:22

My general rule is that if I don't feel it's safe, I don't expose my family to that danger. But that's just me.

By: MamaG on 9/24/09 at 8:25

By: gdiafante on 9/24/09 at 9:22
My general rule is that if I don't feel it's safe, I don't expose my family to that danger. But that's just me.

No, that's just common sense! I don't think I've ever encountered any danger at a park, either.

By: gdiafante on 9/24/09 at 8:30

Common sense...what a novel idea...lol

BTW, spent a year in Okinawa...can't stand asian food...lol

By: dargent7 on 9/24/09 at 8:34

Nazix2.5 (you've been upgraded)....One of my all time favorite songs was by Jim Croce..."Bad, Boy, Leroy Brown"..."...on the south side of Chicago"...., "the meanest part of town"...no wonder you stole the covers!

By: Blanketnazi2 on 9/24/09 at 8:36

you got that right, dargent!
