Letters to the Editor

Don’t make me laugh

Many letters have weighed in on the David Letterman scandal. Most denounce his behavior and associate it with the Hollywood elitist and left wing liberal Democrats — along with accusations of a ‘double-standard.’

Dave was single went he had these multiple affairs. In fact, he married a former staffer this past March. I'm quite sure CBS has a policy in place to protect employees from a hostile work environment. No one ever came forward to complain or sue Letterman or we all would of heard about it.

And thinking women do not go after what they want, in the workplace or any place, is naïve. The failed extortion attempt exposed his dalliances, and he broadcast his mea culpa live on his show. Now he has to answer to his wife.

So, is the case closed? Enter the conservative right Republicans who say he's getting a pass because he's a liberal. Letterman pokes fun at criminals, hypocrites, adulterers and liars. He's a glorified stand-up comic, not someone in Congress paid for by the U.S. taxpayer. There is a difference.

Right on target Paul.

By: Captain Nemo on 10/8/09 at 4:48

Good morning.

I suppose when the rightwing fringe get all of their news from Limbaugh and other so-call entertainers, they would think that liberals do the same.

By: house_of_pain on 10/8/09 at 5:08

The only thing Letterman could be accused of is 'dipping his pen in the company ink'.
I've been guilty of the same thing. Git a rope...

By: Captain Nemo on 10/8/09 at 5:29

house, so now you walk through live as the purple dipper? hehe

By: house_of_pain on 10/8/09 at 5:36

I did eventually marry the poor girl. The company had a strict "you break it, you buy it" policy...

By: Loner on 10/8/09 at 5:50

Good morning, Nashville!

Paul D'Argent scores again. Good LTE, Paul. As I said before, there's blood in the water, sharks are circling Mr. Letterman, this is not over. The defense is going to assassinate Letterman's character and gold-digging former girlfriends may decide to cash in. I think that Dave is going to eventually go down over this, I hope I'm wrong on that.

Of course, the tabloids will now be asking, "Does Letterman have herpes?"..."Letterman gay?" and sordid stuff like that.

By: Loner on 10/8/09 at 6:05

Why did, Robert Halderman, a successful CBS producer need to extort 2 million dollars from Letterman? This snippet from ABC News might give us a clue -

Halderman has been married and divorced twice, according to public records. He had two children with his second wife, and has three stepchildren. His ex-wife won custody of their children and now lives in Colorado.

Divorce records show that Halderman was ordered to pay $6,800 a month in alimony and child support starting May 1, 2004.

By: daKine7 on 10/8/09 at 6:06

Loner: From the "time-lines" I've read, this bimbo living with the extorsionist, Haldemann, moved out in Aug. '09. The jerk read her diary. Saw a "shake-down" available to him, and asked for $2. million to keep silent. "Dave" did the right thing by exposing it, and take the heat. But, his rating have increased double-digit (!).
CBS is happy. Now, his wife could sue him for divorce and win big time, and take the kid too. We have to remember...he's a comedian. Remember Seinfeld? Met an engaged girl at the health club, stole her away from her fiance'. His career is doing alright. I guess the moral is to become a comic. They get laid.... alot.

By: Loner on 10/8/09 at 6:10

Question: If Halderman gets the max of 15 years, will the alimony/child support meter keep running while he's behind bars? If so, how much would he owe when he gets out of jail?

By: daKine7 on 10/8/09 at 6:15

Congressmen who are paid for by the American people, who champion "family values", yet are having affairs is what I can't tolerate. Have guy's like Gingrich carrying on while married, trying to take down Clinton. Or, Larry Craig playing "footsies" in Men's rooms, voting against gay rights. Or Sandford, lying as to his whereabouts, flying to Brazil for a "nooner" on Father's Day, while his 4 sons are left alone. Now, that's hypocricy.

By: Loner on 10/8/09 at 6:16

D7, that "bimbo" may have been in on the shakedown attempt...she's no angel, according to co-workers. Halderman may take the heat, but she may have been his accomplice.

For Halderman and for Dave... and for men everywhere, let this be a lesson - Think with the head on your neck, not the head on your penis.

By: Loner on 10/8/09 at 6:20

Don't forget Senator Ensign screwing the wife of a staffer. Another Republican family guy fooling around on the job.

By: Captain Nemo on 10/8/09 at 6:27

I'm to old to think below the waist line.

There was a time not to long ago that I would wake up in the morning and think of what kind of trouble I could get into. Then I would move and that thought would go away,

By: Captain Nemo on 10/8/09 at 6:30

The GOP is full of family value types. I think that there are a not of conservatives that use religion as a social ladder and not for the true meaning.

By: daKine7 on 10/8/09 at 6:36

Sorry for spelling "hypocrite" wrong in my prior post. See, I run Captain Nemo's, "Spell Check for Complete Idiots" in backround.

By: Grumpy9145 on 10/8/09 at 6:43

Dave deserves to go. If not for this, how about a lack of talent and class?

By: Loner on 10/8/09 at 6:49

Amen, brother Nemo, as we age, morning stiffness can become an issue. Try Ben gay.

I agree, the social ladder aspect of organised religion has been there since the time of Christ and it existed even in pre-Christian times. The oldest profession is not prostitution - the oldest profession is the career holyman.

By: Loner on 10/8/09 at 6:53

Oldest professions? Here's my theory, first came the career holymen, then came the prostitutes. The third profession to evolve was that of comedian. Then the hominids came down from the trees and developed all the others.

By: daKine7 on 10/8/09 at 6:56

Loner: I think you miss-spoke. Didn't you mean to say, "try BenDover"?

By: Loner on 10/8/09 at 7:03

Uh, no, D7. I'm talking about the white cream in a tube...smells like wintergreen. You rub it on and it gets hot. Every jock knows what I'm talkin' about. That reminds me, Ben Gay or HEAT in the jockstrap was an old high school prank....those were the days. Today, there'd be lawsuits.

By: house_of_pain on 10/8/09 at 7:05

Ah yes, the old 'Ben Gay in the jock strap' gag...good times.

By: daKine7 on 10/8/09 at 7:07

Loner: I'm not quite there yet for Ben Gay or the "Icey Hot Patch". Getting close, though.
But, a sure method of birth control, to totally squash and bypass "the moment", is to re-read any of BendOver's or Chief's posts.

By: Loner on 10/8/09 at 7:13

House, my High School had a swimming pool. The old Baby Ruth bar in the pool gag postponed gym class on several occasions. Somebody once released a snapping turtle in that pool, as a gag. It took the janitors all day to capture that irate snapper.

By: Loner on 10/8/09 at 7:15

True that, D7. Like a cold shower. Or baseball.

By: chiefpayne568 on 10/8/09 at 7:24

Ok...I'm confused. If Letterman was single when he had these multiple affairs...and he married a former staffer, which seems to indicate he dated her prior to that, then why did he bother to apologize to his wife?

By: chiefpayne568 on 10/8/09 at 7:29

And more to the point, why did Letterman apologize at all? Granted, it wasn't necessarily professional...but I don't believe there's any law against it either...as long as he didn't force or entice the women to do so to advance their career...and from what I gathered, that never happened.

By: Kosh III on 10/8/09 at 7:44

Loner
IIRC the third were politicians, then comedians.

By: Kosh III on 10/8/09 at 7:48

Loner, also Ensign tried to get a buddy to give a job to the husband of the woman he was banging as a way of keeping him quiet.

By: Blanketnazi2 on 10/8/09 at 8:04

you know, not a single female employee has complained. granted, if he is banging his staff it's probably not the most prudent behavior, but he is being extorted and that is illegal. dave did nothing illegal. inappropriate? probably. illegal? no.

By: chiefpayne568 on 10/8/09 at 8:11

So if we are all agreed that Letterman did nothing wrong, per se, then why all the apologizing and breast beating? And why apologize to his wife? If the affairs happened BEFORE he got married...and SHE was even a prior employee...what is the issue here?

He has nothing to apologize for and there's no harm, no foul.

By: slacker on 10/8/09 at 8:17

I think this is much ado about nothing, and peephole videos should be legalized.

By: slacker on 10/8/09 at 8:21

One or more of the staffers, will sell their story.

By: Loner on 10/8/09 at 8:27

Could be, Kosh, but in those times, the career holyman was also a politician...in the beginning, they were all theocracies....that's my theory.

Sen. Ensign is a Judeo-Christian theocrat....live by the Word, die by the Word. He played the hubby for a pimp...the flesh is weak....what was he thinking with, his dip-stick? (Thwack!)

By: dargent7 on 10/8/09 at 8:33

Chief: I know this Letterman stuff is like theoretical calculus to you, but he was dating his current wife for 5 years before he married her this past March. So, ergo, he was seeing others' during that time. And maybe, he was still boneing the bimbo AFTER he was married. That's what Haldemann had on him. She was sleeping with both of 'em. Women...can't live with 'em, can't live w/o 'em.

By: Loner on 10/8/09 at 8:35

A beautiful day is unfolding out there. The sun is out, the winds are light and it's 53 degrees. Sounds like full leathers are called for. I gotta ride.
Or should I sit here and pontificate?

By: Blanketnazi2 on 10/8/09 at 8:35

Loner, go for the ride. 8~) Enjoy some good weather for me too!

By: dargent7 on 10/8/09 at 8:38

Chief cannot make sense or figure the "Letterman" thing out...and he's the type (mind set) who's in the military doing the "right thing" by the USA?

By: gdiafante on 10/8/09 at 8:55

Not only that Darg, but the CBS producer is saying that he saw Letterman and the woman kissing in her driveway two months ago.

Yep, an apology is appropriate I think.

By: gdiafante on 10/8/09 at 8:56

Blanket, you don't like the weather here...cool, cloudy with rain likely?

Wait, when did I move to Seattle...

By: Blanketnazi2 on 10/8/09 at 9:00

lol, g! i thought it was supposed to be sunny today. that's what i get for watching the news!

By: gdiafante on 10/8/09 at 9:08

I saw a fuzzy caterpillar walking backwards this morning so I knew it would be cloudy with rain likely tonight and for the first half of tomorrow with the barometric pressure somewhere around 30.09, a dewpoint in the low 50's and the the wind from the SE at around 4-5 mph...

By: TonyGottlieb on 10/8/09 at 9:09

Oh ! Ok Paul, of course.. there's no doble standard, its the same for all...
Kind of like Rob Briley being elected to the Tennessee House of Representatives , then being arrested for drunk driving and resisting arrest, adulterating his marriage -w- children all while philandering the Trial Lawyer's association lobbyist as Chairman of the House Judiciary committee but retaining his seat and then handed the Speakers' gavel to preside on the floor.

If so, Briely would have had to have endured an extortion attempt.

By: Captain Nemo on 10/8/09 at 9:12

Ben is gay?

chief is confused?

Must be thier religon.

By: brrrrk on 10/8/09 at 9:14

I also believe that there is an element of revenge here. Halderman used to date one of Lettermans staff members and frequently attended the Letterman cast/worker after work "get-togethers". Apparently Halderman was such a "creep" at these affairs, and Letterman had gotten so many complaints from the female attendees, that Letterman had no recourse but tell the staff members that her boyfriend (Halderman ) was no longer welcome at these affairs. It's amazing what you find out when you know someone that has connections... not that it does me any good! :-)

By: Captain Nemo on 10/8/09 at 9:14

There ois no doble (sic)....must be contageious. lol

By: Dragon on 10/8/09 at 9:16

Why should anyone care about David Letterman?

By: gdiafante on 10/8/09 at 9:18

Obviously you do, or you wouldn't be responding.

By: chiefpayne568 on 10/8/09 at 9:19

Dargent,

Ok...he was dating his current wife and others before he married her. If he was not in a committed relationship, then again no harm, no foul. BUT if he was in a committed relationship, then he was wrong. Ok...I get it. I didn't see the point at which he started dating her and so didn't know he was playing the field at the time.

As for the MAYBE he was messing around after he was married...well, I haven't seen any verification of that anywhere and so can't comment on that.

By: slacker on 10/8/09 at 9:20

Hey brrrrk, my connections (the National Enquirer), tells me Dave's wife, want a 300 mil. settlement.

By: Captain Nemo on 10/8/09 at 9:20

gdia, you got him on that. hehe
