What are we waiting for?

I am writing to express the Tennessee State Soccer Association’s support for the proposed downtown convention center. Many people do not realize the tremendous economic potential that this building will have for the community. Considering this building for only convention use is short-sighted. Nashville has an opportunity to host many major national and international events through this project.

Our organization, comprised of 35,000 players and 5,000 coaches statewide, has been very involved in Nashville’s opportunity to be included in the United States’ bid to host the World Cup. We are proud to be joining an outstanding group of community and civic leaders to make the final pitch.

This event would put Nashville on the international stage and bring in an unprecedented amount of tax revenue and media exposure. To put it in perspective, more than 100,000 tickets were purchased by US residents to attend the games in South Africa this year.

Without the proposed convention center, Nashville can not be included in the U.S. bid, as the event needs a building its size in order to host international media. Other signature sporting events will only consider Nashville if they have such a building as well: [NCAA] Women’s Final Four, SEC Final Four tournament, NHL All-Stars, etc. The interest for such signature events is there — we simply need the right facility.

The question is not ‘should we do it,’ but rather ‘what are we waiting for?’

Twoproblems: What's this project going to cost? If it's projected to run around $600 million, it' will hit $1 billion before it's done with cost overruns.
And the LTE is wrought with "bids, potentials, final pitches"...nothing guaranteed.
A lot of money for "maybes".

By: govskeptic on 10/23/09 at 6:58

Has every association that has an event in this city been
called upon to announce support for this project? The
Music City Marathon has done this, I'm sure, because of
all the free services they get from the city. What the heck
does a Billion dollar convention center have to do with a
soccer match, marathon, or many other endorsers that are
trying to piggyback favor with the Mayor and Council by
endorsing something that means nothing to their event or
organization. Fool the unsuspecting and uninformed is
what this is becoming!

The letter may have good advice, but I think it would have been better if the letter writer lived in the county that will pay fot the convention center.

Next subject.

Ok...so tell me when you see some of the living.

I wonder how they know how many jobs the stimulus supposedly saved anyway? Where do they get the stats for that?

BTW, according to the article "unemployment will remain high, above 9.5 percent, through the end of 2010"

Nothing but an albatross like these other cities have and these organizations with their support only please the Mayor and don't convince most of us it is a need at this critical time in our country.

By: slacker on 10/23/09 at 7:42

Another build it, and pay for it, and we will come group.

By: Dragon on 10/23/09 at 7:47

By Chief:
I wonder how they know how many jobs the stimulus supposedly saved anyway? Where do they get the stats for that?

Chief, don't forget the original Romer analysis. It is based on 1% GDP = 1 million jobs. The stimulus was to spend 3.5% GDP, so they assumed that resulted in 3.5 million jobs.

All they are doing is looking at how much money was spent and saying that resulted in a proportional number of jobs "created or saved". No data or statistics on results are used.

I LOVE it...the White House tried to exclude Fox News from the White House Pool who were to interview the Executive Pay Czar Kenneth Feinberg - but the Washinton Bureau Chiefs of the Five TV news networks consulted and said if Fox wasn't allowed there, NONE of them would go. The Administration relented!

Guess Obama lost this round to FoxNews! And I guess this Administration DOESN'T fully control the media either! This is heartening to me.

Chief: OK, you asked me to come out of retirement, so here it is:
Anyone thinking FOX News or FOX & Friends is "Fair & Balanced" is brain dead and off their rockers and hinges.
All their analysists and commentators are recycled on each of their programs...Dick Morris, Ann Coulter, Michele Maulkin, Karl Rove, Laura Ingram, Huckabee...not a one ever says ONE thing positive about Obama.
Then you got Hannity, who foams at the mouth and Becker Head who cries he's so upset and sorry for the state of America.
FOX News is the marketing arm of the GOP.
All they have on is pro-Christian loosers who's kid was expelled from school for bringing a Bible in.
Or another kids parents who's copy-cat kid was suspended because she wanted to "pray" during finger painting.
They are a dismal display of "news reporting". Cronkite never did this crap.

Like we have a bloody choice now whether to keep working or not! Social Security going down the tubes, Our 401Ks going bust, medicare joining Social Security down the tubes...and finally, reduced medical care to the point of possibly being allowed to die rather than healed due to cost constraints if this lousy healthcare bill goes thru.

We have no choice but to work until we drop now.

Good morning, Nashville!

Bryan Flanagan's LTE is well-written, but full of wishful thinking and self-serving rationalizations.

The Brookings Institute has studied Convention Center Trends, if you are "pro-convention center", the results are not encouraging. I'd put the URL on here, but it's a super-long. Since it's in PDF, getting a snippet is problematic. Just Google - convention center trends - then go to the Brookings Institute study...it's on page one of the results. It's worth the hassle, if one seeks the facts, not the hype.

The report was done before the economic meltdown, if things were bad then, they are most likely worse today.

Bottom line - save your money, Nashville. A big, new, expensive and financially risky Convention Center is not in the general interest of the people of Nashvlille.....IMHO.

By: Kosh III on 10/23/09 at 8:36

"It's almost 9:00 and nobody has insulted d7...WTF?"

Fine! Fine.

Dar--you ignorant slut!

Happy?

By: chiefpayne568 on 10/23/09 at 8:37

Dargent,

Ok...I'll give you that they do have commentary...and the news outlet IS right leaning.

But I defy you to say any of the others are any better than Fox! In point of fact, many of the others are even worse than Fox.

As for being dismal at reporting, may I remind you that they have broken stories the others had to catch up to later. And that some of the other news outlets actually have someone watching Fox News, just so they won't miss out on breaking news!

IS Fox News Fair and Balanced? No more than any of the OTHER news outlets...and MUCH more so than some of them.

By: chiefpayne568 on 10/23/09 at 8:38

Dargent,

And BTW, Cronkite never did crap like what ANY of them are doing because if he had done so, he would have lost his audience and would have been fired...and he KNEW that.

By: Kosh III on 10/23/09 at 8:46

"A big, new, expensive and financially risky Convention Center is not in the general interest of the people of Nashvlille.....IMHO"

But we know it's really not intended for the benefit of the people, that's just the excuse. It is intended to benefit a few narrow monied groups.

By: pandabear on 10/23/09 at 8:48

Finally.

Someone willing to step up and pay for the cc:

The Tennessee State Soccer Association !

Way to go guys. Can't wait to see the money.

Where are you getting it from anyway ?

By: Dragon on 10/23/09 at 8:53

Dargent - you have to separate the straight news from the analysis/commentator shows. Hannity, Beck, etc are commentators and voice opinions. MSNBC is not the same "news" as NBC. Is MSNBC a "real" news organization because they have Olberman and Maddow? Is Maureen Dowd (one of those invited to an off-the-record meeting with the president) a journalist or commentator?

I'll admit, it is almost impossible to separate news and opinion in almost any media. Even newpapers insert bias when they select which news to report and on what page. I am glad to see the White House press pool stand up for its sovereignty and reject control from the White House press office.

By: Loner on 10/23/09 at 8:56

That's it, Kosh...we do everything for two basic reasons, the good reason and the real reason. The good reasons are plentiful and well-trumpeted....the real reasons are seldom articulated by the beneficiaries. Critics who attempt to expose the real reasons are often subjected to personal attacks from professional zealots.

By: Funditto on 10/23/09 at 9:01

Ever noticed that Fox News regularly shows erectile dysfunction, phone in sex and Hardees commercials while CNN shows BMW, Apple and other upscale products. Please explain what that says about the average FOX viewer vs. the average CNN viewer? Taste maybe? Intellect perhaps? Just curious.

By: Loner on 10/23/09 at 9:11

I agree with Dragon, the White House pool is standing up for its sovereignty by siding with FOX news. I wonder though, why the WH press corps did not object to the Bush-Cheney abuses with similar solidarity. Once on Bush's fecal roster, you were SOL. They tolerated that kind of thing for eight years.

I say. let the FOX into the White House....let the feathers fly. Obama needs a good ol' coon-dog-type of a press spokesperson....one that can keep the FOX away from the roosters, hens and eggs. Gibbs is a bit tongue-tied and subdued.

By: Loner on 10/23/09 at 9:19

Excellent point, Funditto..."by their sponsors ye shall know them"
...or something like that. The fringe-right theocrats on AM radio are pitching colon cleansers, gold and water filtering systems. They'll have clean water, clean colons and clean, shiny gold when the rapture comes...or the revolution. Their powder is dry...they are signing oaths.

By: Dragon on 10/23/09 at 9:27

I'm surprised that Gibbs still has a job. Read the press briefings and you'll see his penchant for expressing his own opinion and being reluctant to state the White House position on many issues. His stammering is also very annoying.
"Well, look, I think that -- I think there are -- I don't think anybody would..."

Dragon said

No, and neither does MSNBC make any disingenuous claims to be a news organization. What's their tag line?...... "a place to go for politics".

dargent7 said

"Then you got Hannity, who foams at the mouth and Becker Head who cries he's so upset and sorry for the state of America."

Speaking of the Beck-ster, did you happen to hear that the Obama administration is going to use OnStar to spy on us? His logic (if you want to call it that) is.... GM has OnStar in their cars, and the Obama administration helped GM with a bailout, so logically that means that the Obama administration will now spy on us via OnStar. How is it possible to stack manure that high? C'mon Chief... even you have to admit that that is tin foil hat thinking at it's best...

By: Captain Nemo on 10/23/09 at 9:44

On the bright side there could be a Star Trek Convention come to the New Convention Center. But I'm still going back to Vegas.

We could have a bigger boat show, out door show, home show. Just think of all the possiblities.

By: chiefpayne568 on 10/23/09 at 9:45

brrrk,

MSNBC's website says it's a news organization. It says it runs the news. Point is, they all say they run the news and they all have SOME kind of agenda.

So, IMO, they're all at least somewhat biased.

By: Captain Nemo on 10/23/09 at 9:50

Funditto is right about Fox TV adds and viewers. That does bring up some interesting questions.

By: chiefpayne568 on 10/23/09 at 10:27

brrrrk,

Well the discussion was whether Fox News was not a news site vs. their competition. I was saying they are all about equal in bias so they're all about as close to the news a we're going to get.

The only difference is, Fox is reporting on some things the mainstream media don't seem to pick up on as fast...or at all.
