Networks dropped the ball

Once again [this time on Sunday, March 21] I was appalled when I turned to the local stations in an attempt to see the evening newscasts. As usual, I found that the CBS Evening News had been pre-empted by sports and that NBC News was as well. ABC News, on the other hand, had the good sense to show an actual newscast.

On this momentous day in history [with the passage of the health care bill], one might think that someone at CBS or NBC would have had the good sense to preempt their beloved sports in favor of the news. But, once again, we see that they believe that people playing with a ball is more important than our nation's future!

Kudos to ABC News, which truly carried the ball.

Well the SEC tournament generated $10 million in revenue for what, less than a week? The Predators have 41 home games, which brings at least 14K downtown each game.

You do the math.

I agree House.

By: Loner on 3/22/10 at 11:52

It counts. And no, I never got a wedgie from a jock...those guys like guys with nice round asses....you should know all about the protocols of wedgies, Gd.....you ought to know about the covert homosexuality that is common in so many locker rooms....I'll bet that you used to like to thwack those freshly-showered bare cheeks with a towel..am I right?

Hey, I'm a UU believer...gay is OK......BDSM is another matter.

Can't we all just get along? (cye: Kum By Yah theme)

By: house_of_pain on 3/22/10 at 11:55

Hey, Loner, could you get that soap for me?

By: gdiafante on 3/22/10 at 11:55

Come on Loner, you're better than that. I never pegged you for a homophobe. That's disconcerting.

House, not to mention that the Preds run the arena, so any concert or event is also counted. Metro's doing just fine with the Preds here.

Had a great day last Friday. Fell off a 6" curb and due to my quick thinking, rolled in a ball and received no injury. Thought everyone would love some positive news about ME.

Then today, I stopped to picked up a board with nails in it on Murfreesboro road. It was going to be disastrous for someone to run over it and burst their precious tire. Alas, when I hurled the board with nails to the side of the street, the force of me huring a heavy board, pulled me along with it and I fell AGAIN. So there's 2 falls within 5 days.

So, no more politics for me. I'm only going to write about me. Has anyone heard from DustyU, Brian U or any of the "U" family?

Glad everyone is OK. Funditto, congrats! Glad you can claim a victory!

Don't forget all the billions in welfare checks to the wealthy and the military-industrial complex. E.g. 7 million a year to the Preds, how much to Dell? how much to Halliburton?

Kosh, I won't forget. BUT when I got my millions, I forgot where I put it. I don't care anymore. I'm over the U.S. Gov't. I only want to know one thing from you Kosh, "how are you doing". Fine. I hope! I'm O.K. except for the bruise on my shin where I fell while trying to do a good deed. Maybe no more good deeds are my answer.

Also, update on dogs and cats: They are being fed 1/4 of their daily allocated food supply. Trying to slim them down also.

By: house_of_pain on 3/22/10 at 12:00

sid, you may need that new health care bill if you're not careful.

"For the first time in 62.5 years, I am sick of this country, it's politicians, both dems and reps, and will no longer dialogue on the matter."

Then get out.

O.K., but first can you help me get off the "terrorist" watch list? I found out that because I'm old and falling down a lot (2 times is a lot) that I'm being watched.

And if I leave, will America be better off? But where should I go? Oh, maybe Mexico; then I can sneak back in and get everything I've missed for the past 62.5 years.

I will never post another thing on this post that makes sense to anyone, including myself.

when i walked to the door to let my dogs out i stubbed my toe. then when i was drying my hair it got all knotted up. then i noticed that my gums near one of my teeth bled while i was flossing. when i poured my coffee this morning i used a little extra creamer so that it would be a bit sweeter.....

And I, also, wish someone were filming it. I laughed my butt off. A guy in a Mercedez came to my rescue. So I told my husband that the next time I see a cute guy in a Mercedez, I"m going to throw myself on the street and run away with him.

I've also created a new CLUB: THE OPZone! You can join the Old People Zone after your first document fall from a 6" curb.

Really, I got more attention that day than any other time in my life. I loved it!

G, I bet if I write to Ellen D, and tell her my "fall" story, that she would help me "reinact" it.

It was hilarious!

Slacker, no more rolling in "balls" for you.

By: Loner on 3/22/10 at 12:10

Indeed, let's do the math.

What percentage of the revenue gross (the original pie) goes to state taxes? What percentage goes to pay Nashville City (Metro) taxes?

I thought that TN was one of the few remaining states w/o a state income tax, how is the state and city re-imbursed for their investment? What is the mechanism? Is it a sales tax or what?

How big of a slice of the revenue pie went to repay TN taxpayers?

It would take a huge pie to generate a 7-million-dollar slice. If 20% of the pie went to pay taxes, for the sake of argument, it would require a 35-million-dollar pie to produce a slice like that. And that's assuming a 20% tax rate in a state that traditionally eschews taxes.

Sorry, I remain unconvinced of the idea that the Preds are generating more tax revenues than they consume. Any other skeptics out there?

By: gdiafante on 3/22/10 at 12:13

Of course you do, Loner. And we care because...

You do your homework and get back to us...chop chop.

By: Loner on 3/22/10 at 12:17

As for my athletic prowess, let me just say that I was recruited by Cornell University's Crew team. I was a coxswain, calling out orders and cadence for Cornell's 8-man hvy wt crew squads. Then I quit college and joined the US Army....I received no wedgies in HS, at Cornell or in the Arrny.

By: house_of_pain on 3/22/10 at 12:17

Part of the benefit is intangible...file it under Mental Well-Being for Citizens Who Like Sports. There's plenty of other stuff for the rest of the population that is backed by tax $.

By: house_of_pain on 3/22/10 at 12:19

You survived Cornell?!

A 60ish women rolls into a ball at a gay bar...

By: gdiafante on 3/22/10 at 12:22

If I'm not mistaken, it was the city who ponied up the cash, not the state. And like I said, the Preds run the arena, so you must count all revenue, even from concerts and other events (including the SEC tournament).

Here ended the debate.

By: gdiafante on 3/22/10 at 12:23

Wow Loner, I'm surprised you haven't killed yourself yet, that seems to be a Cornell thing.

Don't do it, man.

OK, I'm off for a while. Well, that came out wrong. I'm always "off". BUT I'm signing off till later. D7, thanks for all your positive feedback. I just love it when you're nice to me. Love and Kisses, Sidiot!

"Mental Well-Being"?

Uh, House, I've personally witnessed and seen countless camera shots of the fans at the televised pro-sports games....the wigs, the warpaint, the costumes, the signage, the props.... and I've heard the screams and cussing of the fans...I too have held my urine, waiting in one of the long lines at the stadium men's rooms, where we drain off the remains of those rented beers....verily, I have seen "The Big Johns".

I would not put fanhood in the "mental well-being" category.

No homophobia here, Gd...but, no, I leave any dropped bar of soap on the shower room floor and rinse off quickly....I prefer to let others use the old soap trick. Kum By Yah.....Kum By Yah

Maybe you have arthritis, Loner. And really, do people use bars of soap anymore? And why are you not showering alone...

This and many other questions will be answered on next week's episode of Soap.

Ed played football for Cornell in the early seventies, I was at Cornell from 9-65 thru 6-67...actually I am on a leave of absence for military service....I have been told that such leaves have no expiration date. perhaps, I should go back and show those young punks how to bark orders at fledgling oarsman...Grampa at the Rudder....could make a great Sports Illustrated cover...or not.

No crippling Arthritis yet.....I'm old-fashioned, I use a bar of soap instead of those sexy body washes for men...this could explain much. BTW I use unscented, fragrance-free, Dove bar soap....skin doctor-recommended....Selsun Blue is my shampoo....again, doctor recommended.

I shower at the YMCA about three times a week, it's semi-private showering. Dropped soap at the Y could be misinterpreted.

At Brushwood, my summer retreat, I use the co-ed shower facilities...again, soap on a rope is a good idea there too. Nothing quite like carrying on a political conversation or engaging in a discussion about the supernatural with a naked lady in a unisex shower room.

Anyone else care to discuss the social dynamics of showering? It's good clean fun...go for it.

blanket, that's nothing. I cleaned the hamster cage and got poo and shavings all over the bathroom... then when I was carrying the bag downstairs I DROPPED IT and just know there are tiny pellets of hamster poo in the cracks of my stairs the vacuum missed...then my big dog dug up one of his many babies from the yard and brought it in the kitchen and there's crumbled mud everywhere...then my nosy neighbor knocked on my door and was boo hooing about some minor little thing...then my teenager wrecked the OTHER bumper of our car - the one that doesn't have collision coverage, just liability...

Did I top Syd? There's more....
