District 17 Senate primary heats up

At the end of the legislative session, we watched a battle unfold between the House and Senate. Oddly, the two controlling sides were conservative Republicans actually trying to accomplish the same goals.

We all know there is no love lost between the two conservative candidates for Senate District 17 — Mae Beavers and Susan Lynn. Both candidates have worked hard over the years to achieve conservative goals in government and to do their best to represent the constituents. Lynn decided to run for the seat after Beavers announced she would seek the Wilson County Mayor's seat, but Beavers did an about face and decided to run for re-election of her current seat.

The main legislative battle became over protecting Tennesseans from Obamacare. An overwhelming majority of Americans have rejected the socialist takeover of our healthcare system and Beavers and Lynn have worked to protect Tennesseans from this unconstitutional overreach of federal government powers.

How do we decide the right candidate? Just look at how this legislation died and which candidate fought for our rights, and which candidate played politics.

The legislative session ran very late this year. Knowing this, Beavers decided to wait until the last few days to dump 31 different bills at the foot of the House and expected Lynn to just go along with every single one of them. Instead of taking responsibility for her inefficiency, Beavers decided to blame Lynn for not rubber-stamping her bills. Then Beavers played politics with the Health Freedom Act to make sure she can say she fought against Obamacare even though Diane Black was supposed to be the senator that pushed the bill through.

Lynn's bill, HR 2622 was set to easily pass in the House, which it did. However, Beavers couldn't seem to live with Lynn getting the credit for this.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vCysdVVSXa0b

As Beavers explains in this youTube video, the Senate recalled the bill "passed in February" to insert her language and name into the bill.

So, what was so important that the Senate needed to change language on a bill already passed? Beavers wanted to force Attorney General Bob Cooper to file a lawsuit against the federal government's Healthcare Bill. Unfortunately, in the state of Tennessee, the Attorney General is appointed by the state Supreme Court so that would be the same as the legislative branch telling the judicial branch what must do.

When you listen to the language of both candidates explaining what happened, Lynn took the high road and Beavers took the low road saying, "the House needs to act like adults." Well, I will act like an adult and recognize which candidate was working for us and which candidate was working for her self.

"If one Googles 'right to life', it becomes apparent that the term has been usurped by those who believe that the human fetus has a right to life.....children and adullts are left out of the definition."

Thought you might find this interesting Loner, et al.

"Psychologists and linguists from Berkeley's Dr. George Lakoff to Emory's Dr. Drew Westen advise corporations and political parties alike to give up on facts and focus of framing issues instead. Accepting the impulsive and emotionality of the voting public as a given to be exploited rather than a predicament to be corrected, they implore even the most anti-elitists to give in and adopt Gladwell's 'blink' philosophy. They point to the successful Republican strategist Frank Luntz, whose focus groups helped him reword 'global warming' as 'climate change,' 'estate tax' as 'death tax,' and 'third-trimester abortion' as 'partial-birth abortion.' These simple adjustments had a profound effect on the public opinion issues themselves. But Lakoff uses these examples of successful political marketing to expound a voters-are-idiots hypothesis. He says that people are too stupid to understand that a federal tax cut would only be offset by and increase in the local tax or privatization. So rather than educate the masses, we should simply dispense with facts." - from Life Inc.

Note: Gladwell's "blink" philosophy insists that human choices - even very important ones - are made automatically, in the blink of an eye.

Get it folks? We're being manipulated as consumers; of everything from toothpaste to politics.... and some are more manipulated than others.

It was get the job done and as cheap as possible that sank the Deepwater-Horizon.

By: BenDover on 6/15/10 at 9:50

Nope... it was Obama, first in promise, then in practice, that knocked us off of the precarious CRA perch.

Bush and Bernanke saved the day with TARP and $1trillon dollars worth of new paper and ink... stopping a full melt-down. You see loner, Bush's TARP has been mostly repaid (with the notable exceptions of Fannie, Freddie and GMAC). If Obama had not gone on a binge by illegally respending it all in addition to the unnecessary $750M pork stimulus bill then we'd be sitting pretty right now with deficits back in the 10s of Billions rather than in the Trillions. A strong dollar and an on-track treasury would be a great place to invest right now and the rest of the world would not be suffering continued fear of America's next stupid entitlement or tax threat.

By: Captain Nemo on 6/15/10 at 9:54

I recall you calling the TARP as Obama's. Now that it is working, it is Bush's.

By: Blanketnazi2 on 6/15/10 at 9:54

lol - good point, Nemo.

"Since the definition of a liberal is one who believes everyone else is a drooling idiot;"

There used to be good, honest and ethical conservatives: Buckley, Goldwater to name two.
If only Palin would drool more, maybe her devotees would see her for what she is: a demogogue.

By: BenDover on 6/15/10 at 9:58

You don't recall me calling TARP Obama's. I've said all along it was Bush's and it was a good move. I've criticized Obama for respending the TARP repayments against the legislation that said it must be re-applied to the debt.

I'm curious "newt", who's going to pay for Tennessee's shortage of funds when all those "Rich Lefties" leave? Remember, in the past 30 years Tennessee has never once paid more in Federal taxes than they received in Federal funding... the same goes for a lot of other conservative states.

And by the way, why should the "left" have to deal with Mississippi and Memphis when they're the Souths mess? Just like a Republican, you create the mess and then expect someone else to clean it up for you. That's what you call personal responsibility.... right?

By: Blanketnazi2 on 6/15/10 at 10:02

Ben, i do recall you saying that because i remember posting for your benefit where TARP had been repaid. i don't think Nemo is "misremembering."

By: BenDover on 6/15/10 at 10:08

Both sides conservatives and liberals have hangers-on who have no understanding of the root philosophy and carry on for their side as if it was a college football team.

I'd be fine with a competency test to vote though, that included a section on history, civics and basic economics to cull out the clueless, Kosh... how about you? I think the liberal's have far more to lose than conservatives if we apply a competency test.

And please skip the Jim Crow rebuttal... I know such a test is impossible... I'm just trying to make a point.

i would beg to differ on that......

By: BenDover on 6/15/10 at 10:12

I've said the same thing about TARP all along. i believed it was necessary when it passed. I was refuting the knee-jerk conservatives about it.

I just don't think Obama should have respent all the repayments like some kind of slush fund. I think they should have been put back against the deficit like the bill said when they voted on it and passed it.

Morning all.

I'm curious to understand why the comments about the Afghan find are so bad.

I understand the negative impact of some types of mining, but keeping in mind that most people are wanting to get away from oil dependence and that largely seems to involve us using more electric cars. Isn't the lithium find a great thing for that? Otherwise adding millions of cars needing batteries would drive the cost up.

Secondly it will bring a new economy to the country. Surely this will mean many many jobs for miners, road construction, etc. If it is largely done by Afghans and not Haliburton then it will benefit a great number of people. The country will surely make good by taxing the products.

Sounds like their biggest blockage is their corruption. But overbearing authority (or it's perceived need) tends to incubate corruption. :(

Just some thoughts.

By: BenDover on 6/15/10 at 10:14

Let's have the test then, BN.

The question is, given this information, can we honestly say that our intentions towards Afghanistan are as benevolent as we are told? Is this nothing more than another attempt at imperialism?

Why do you think the right is so adamant about defunding public education initiatives? God forbid we introduce new ideas to our citizenry. Reminds me lyrics from an Ozark Mountain Daredevils song...

" given this information, can we honestly say that our intentions towards Afghanistan are as benevolent as we are told? Is this nothing more than another attempt at imperialism?"

Oil Imperialism. The war was not about 9/11 but served as an excuse for Unocal to get a friendly government that would let them build their oil pipeline across the country.

I am sure that Cheney and his plutocrat buddies are drooling over the opportunity to plunder Afghanistan of all their minerals.

By: Kosh III on 6/15/10 at 10:41

Bring on the test.

1. What was the name of the city in modern day Illinois that was the capital of an empire extending thru much of land from 1050ce to circa1400ce? Hint. It had the second largest pyramid in the Western Hemisphere.

2. Which is the most important figure on a totem pole, the top or bottom?

3. What is your favorite colour?

Ben, Congress, not the Executive branch does all the spending....according to the Constitution...yjay's what my Civics courses taught me. Congress must have OK'd any spending, aren't you personalizing this thing?

Personal demonization is the current modus operandi. When FDR pushed his New Deal package through Congress and it became law, the Republicans of the day did not call Social Security, "Roosevelt-security". They did not call the Civilian Conservation Corps, "Roosevelt's Enviro-whackos".

Nowadays, it's vicious and personal. But it's his policies, not his race, or so I am told.

Today the GOP uses the pejorative "Obamacare" to describe the healthcare reforms. The Republicans have been reduced to the party of ad hominem and fear. Good luck with that catching on.

Pardon my typos...hey, I gotta run. Getting my postal jeep ready for the Brushwood run. That's a 200-mile journey, a long distance for that old US mule. I take the back roads and pull over frequently to let traffic go by. She cruises at 45 mph. I stop a couple of times along the way, at the reservation etc.

Later!
