In 1811, British society was rocked by the introduction of new technology in the weaving industry. New and more efficient equipment and manufacturing processes made it possible to produce textiles much quicker and cheaper than by traditional hand weaving. The new technology put a lot of weavers out of business, and the weavers responded by breaking into factories and smashing the new machinery at the direction of the mythical "King" Ludd, rumored to be directing the weavers
