Rep. Gordon: ‘The Heroes Among Us’

Commentary by Congressman Bart Gordon

A recent survey asked people, “What Makes a Hero?” Similar answers were given — more than 80 percent said “not giving up until the goal is accomplished” and “overcoming adversity.” People often list religious and historical leaders, members of our Armed Forces, firefighters and sports stars as heroes.

There is another special group of heroes who receive less attention but who positively affect the lives of tens of thousands of individuals each year: people who welcome children into their lives through adoption.

Last year, more than 50,000 children were adopted from the U.S. foster care system and another 17,000 children were adopted from abroad. The people who became parents to these children had to overcome adversity and not give up until their goal of completing the adoption process was accomplished. Each of these parents is a hero in my mind.

Mark and Janet Carlton of Murfreesboro are two such heroes. In August 2008, I was able to help them complete their adoption of a little boy from Guatemala. The adoption process is by no means easy, but Mark and Janet persevered through the process and welcomed Nathan, who is now two years old, into their lives.

Mark and Janet attribute their motivation in part to Janet’s late sister, Kathy, who was a social worker at the Heaven Sent Children adoption agency.

I recently nominated the Carlton family to be one of the 2009 “Angels in Adoption” — a program sponsored by the Congressional Coalition on Adoption Institute to honor the good work of people who have enriched the lives of foster children and orphans in the U.S. and abroad. The Carlton family will join 190 other Angels in Washington, D.C. to share their stories with other members of Congress and raise awareness about the thousands of foster children in the U.S. and the millions around the world who need permanent, safe and loving homes.

Growing up without a parent can be especially difficult. Studies have shown that when it comes to school performance, social competency and health measures, adopted children share similarly high scores with children raised by their birth mother and father. Unfortunately, children who remain in the foster care system without a nurturing parental figure don’t perform as well.

Making a difference in a foster child’s life is not limited to adopting. Volunteering to mentor can greatly benefit a child’s life. Studies show that 44 percent of mentored teens in foster care are less likely to use drugs and 59 percent have better academic performance. Children who spend time with a mentor also have better relationships with adults, fewer disciplinary referrals, and more confidence.

I encourage anyone who has some extra time to consider mentoring a foster child. For more information, just call 1-866-516-LIFT or visit www.tn.gov/youth/mentoring.

Every child deserves a loving and encouraging parental figure. The people who choose to adopt or mentor a foster child should be regarded as heroes.

I have a friend in Florida who has 3 foster children through a PRIVATE foster care agency; that agency provides no benefits for the children or the foster parent. The foster parent pays for all food, clothing, toys, recreation, school and medical attention. The foster mother can call and come to visit at the drop of a hat because my friend thinks it's the right thing to do even though the mother is a druggie and father no where to be found. She has had 2 of the children (ages 11 & 12) for 5 years and the younger child for 1 year. Another woman has the 2 sisters of the younger child. These families, the ones who are volunteers and who get no state or federal aid are my heros. They truly sacrifice for these unwanted, abandoned by their drug addict/drunken parents' children.

Adoption? A very worthy issue, no doubt.

Though I have Never been 'prejudiced' about 'gay couples' living in common liberty (and have even accepted a severe 'gay bashing' without seeking reprisal), I would ask Rep Gordon what he thinks about 'adoption by Gay couples'? In Califonia they seem to be selectively 'stealing children', and I've heard that some dyke doctors are 'stealing penuses' to be used like a 'Frankenstien' on one of their female patients wanting rather to have been born with one. This is not a laughing matter, and I wish there were a better dicriptive word than "Dyke", though lesbian is not enough.

I, as a man and a candidate, am Against Adoption by Gay couples, homosexuals men and lebians (even while my own name sounds Gay and i won't change it). I have signed petitions against it and would vote against anywhere in the USA. Peace

idgaf,
Do you not respect anyone? We have President Obama, Rep. Pelosi, and Sen. Reid and they have titles and they should be used. Do you think that it makes you look more like a rebel if you show disrespect.? President Bush will go down as the worse president ever, but he has a title. The Bush administration is the one that broke the bank. President Obama is trying to fix what he broke. The Bush Administartion put the two wars off budget because they were trying to fool the people. But, as President Bush was trying to say,"You can't fool all the people...."

barry and his chicago mob are trying to destroy this country and unfortunately are doing a pretty good job of it.

idgaf, unemployment was under 5% in the country in 2007/08; now it's nearly doubled under the O'bama rule. We have spent more in one year than we did in 200 years and the economy is bleak. BUT where is the president? He's going to Sweden with Oprah and Michelle to pitch the Chicago olympics. He's not the Jr. Senator from Chicago any longer. He has not got a "got in that fight" because he's not from Chicago anymore; he's from D.C. He needs to get his butt home and run the country from the white house, not from Sweden; his jet; or a hamburger joint.

Typo on o'bama. Should be "he has not got a "dog in the fight" because he's not from chicago anymore".

Anyway, I see you don't have a quirky response to that. Oh, I forgot, he's "speed reading" the Afghan policy and gonna make a quickie decision on that before he goes to Sweden. He runs the gov'ment like those speed daters on t.v. run their lives. Bip, bam, thank you mam. Let's hurry and pass health care, bail out plans and war stuff, but let's take our time and get buff in the gyn everyday so the tabloids can run "buffed up" photos of our abs our arms and our lives. GET into the oval office and work, please.
