U.S. Senator Bob Corker (R-Tenn.), a member of the Senate Banking Committee, Tuesday voted to create a bipartisan task force to address America’s skyrocketing national debt, which is $12.3 trillion and rising. But the amendment failed by a vote of 53-46. (60 votes were required for passage.)
The Bipartisan Task Force for Responsible Fiscal Action Act, introduced by Senators Kent Conrad (D-N.D.), and Judd Gregg (R-N.H.), would establish an 18-member task force to develop and vote on a series of recommendations to correct the federal government’s fiscal imbalances.
Corker was surprised that the act did not have broader support.
“I don’t see how anyone could be opposed to a statutory commission, established by Republicans and Democrats, to create a road map for dealing with America’s unsustainable entitlement spending,” he said. “With our country having racked up more than $12.3 trillion in debt and Medicare and Social Security rapidly approaching insolvency, our future prosperity as a nation literally hangs in the balance. Lacking any construct for fiscal discipline, Congress has repeatedly failed to address the coming fiscal calamity for political reasons, leaving us at point where we cannot wait any longer to act.
“We shouldn’t let politics keep us from making tough decisions that will put this country on solid footing,” Corker continued. “If the task force’s recommendations are not good, vote against them. But let’s put a process in place to make sure seniors continue to have Medicare and Social Security and young people in this country aren’t burdened with huge amounts of debt because we lack the courage to fulfill our responsibilities to the American people.
“I cannot support increasing the debt limit any further without a guarantee that Congress will make an honest attempt this year to restore fiscal discipline.”
(From a press release issued by Sen. Corker’s office on Tuesday.)
If the CP has quit letters then I quit the City Paper . I had rather read reader opinions than columists . That's where the truth is to be found. f this is the case hen i will stick with the Tennessean and USA Today .
And I will follow! This off again, on again agenda is showing lack of experience, in some dept.. Also have noticed, alot of the columns are the day before repeats. There is enough news in and around Nashville for an completely updated paper every day.
Need to change that "an" to "a" before completely!
Not necessary bfra I didn't correct mine .
Wanted to change it before the typo police woke up! (G)
The Typo Police, like Drs., play golf on Weds.
"Vinnie T." responded on Monday saying the "Letters" was nothing more than a chat room. So, what?
What effort is there for someone to type a simple LTE? Or import the thing, typo's, poor grammer, misspellings, and all?
This format TCP uses is the most basic. Compared to DISCUS which a lot of papers use or the one The Tennessean uses. Oh, well.
The previously undefeated & #1 ranked Kentucky basketball team received a congratulatory phone call from the president recently. Last night they lost to South Carolina. Coincidence? I think not. It's all Obama's fault...
Good morning, Nashville!
First, the Corker letter. Sen. Corker, the Caucasian beneficiary of the GOP dirty election tricks squad, is suddenly a fiscal conservative. Corker sez he wants to "create a road map for dealing with America’s unsustainable entitlement spending". No mention. of course, of the out of control military spending, enormous bank and insurance company bailouts, or wasted foreign aid etc. It's the social welfare programs that the GOP "road map" is designed to curtail.
Road maps have failed wherever they are proposed; the Israeli-Palesiinian "roadmap to peace" dates back to the Clinton years and nobody is going anywhere with that. It's not that these maps don't offer a plan, it's that the plan is ususally fatally flawed from the outset and therefore doomed to failure.
Wth lobbyists controling every federal lawmaker and campaign finance reform set back by the recent SCOTUS decision, we Americans should get used to the fact that this nation is headed for absolute bankruptcy and geopolitical irrelevancy. The union of American states may well break apart under the titanic strain and stresses that are on the horizon.
As for the NCP. Let's all send in an LTE or two. If we want to save this posting community, we should all get to work and send something in.
Loner: Tell me you were hopefully never a waiter.
When asked, "What's the daily special?", you'd take to the podium and recite the Gettysburg Address as a preamble....just kidding.
As "Vinnie T." said, "it's just a chat room" and by that, I think he was implying he was going to end it. Seems he already did.
So, let's keep on chattin'
Chattin' my blues away....
Gotta run for now, later.
PS: I was never a waiter, too freakin' ugly.
Maybe they had no letters to publish? Sally needs to post another. A woman's point of view is always so refreshing and profound, right?
Pain: My parents live in Hilton Head, SC. I'm quite sure they had something to do with it.
I don't care if they print LTE's or not, this is entertainment.
"With the lights out...it's just dangerous...here we are now, entertain us..."
Morning all - D7 you still here?
Which green do they live on, d7?
House - Hurricane Tilly :)
Dusty, Jennifer or Meg?
Re corky's press release - He's surprised that neither D's or R's want limits on their pig trough? Who's he kidding?
House - Joyce definitely - Hurricanes are definitely female
For the record, "Dooley" and myself have 10 LTE's in the hopper waiting for publication. Why TCP stopped was probably due to borderline incest. Aside from Zizza's blubbering all over Taylor Swift bringing pedophile charges, they just gave it up.
Parents live in Sun City, SC now.
d7 - do lte's have to be mailed or can I do it online somehow?
Looks like VinnyT is gonna ''whack'' the LTE's.
We sleep with the fishes.
Arrivederci all.
D-U: I know you asked this last week: e-mail them to: editor@nashvillecitypaper.com
They swithched over to "editor" from "letters" about 6 months ago.
I'd cc: it to The Tennessean paper:
letters@tennessean.com
I think TCP is pulling the plug in their "letters" section out of ED, shrunken testicles, COPD, or just plain spite.
d7 - Lord! You mean we'll have to move over to TOP with all those (other) crazies?
I'm at the Java Junction in historic Brockport, New York. Many of the villages in this area end with a "-port" e.g. Brockport, Spencerport, Lockport, Gasport, Middleport and yes, even Weedsport. These towns are located on the Erie Canal.
Woody, the guy who did the "Fossil Metal" video is here. I told him that imprtant people in Nashville are aware of his talents. He is going to add more music at the end of the video.
He's looking over my shoulder, anybody want to say howdy to Woody Nicholson?
Fuhgetaboutit, slacker. I talked to my Italian friend, Sonny "Two D*cks", and he's checking into the matter personally.
Loner, give Woody my regards.
Loved his father in ''One Flew Over The Cucoo's Nest''.
Howdy, Woody.
pain, just in case, I'm leaving you my gold chain, and pinkie ring.
Loner - Have a cup for me - Video's about the old fossils that listen to metal sounds interesting :)
Dusty, I posted the following URL yesterday. It links to a site operated by Woody Nicholson. He put together a YouTube video featuring old Loner entitled "Fossil Metal". It was an impromptu, extemporaneous improvisational thing. Woody and I played together in the Loners, a cowboy blues band.
http://www.youtube.com/user/rcknicholson
Woody read the greetings, he's says, "stay tuned for part 2.
good morning, all.
D-U: The only certified insane persons over at Tennessean is "ed179" and "stop thelunacy". They hate Al Gore, all Democrats, Obama, Pelosi, Reid, national health care, and our own "dooley". I once told them, "but 45,000 Americans die a year, 1,000 each week, because of no health insurance"....their comeback, "You exaggerate, it's only 900".
Banker's hours today, Blanket?
Loner, if you & Woody shoot the next one in Nashville, maybe Tony Zizza could get Taylor Swift to appear in the video.
d7 - considering some of the posts on your last lte are you sure about that? :)
i wish, house.
I got lucky this week...my boss went to Phizer yesterday, and won't be back until tomorrow. I'm taking full advantage of the situation. I'll be posting from home(again) shortly. Life is hard...
That's a thought, House. Torch-bearing Tony has influence with the sweet and swooning Swift....it could happen.
Good morning everyone! Welcome, Woody. How are things in the cold north today?
Taylor Swift did a video at the school my son goes to a couple years ago...not that that is important...
I thought the new guy was someone coming from Louisville? Is that Vinny T? I was thinking his (new guy) name was John for some reason. Let's all submit letters here and see if we can keep things going.
Dusty, glad to see you're back today. How was your date with Sid yesterday? I'm sure you had a great time! LOL
Hi mama - my grandson said you asked about me yesterday - thanks for your concern
House, I'm a little bit jealous!
Yep, dusty, just wanted to be sure you were okay. Glad you're back today. How was your blood sugar this morning?
Mama - spent last 2 days in St Thomas undergoing tests :(
Hope everything goes well for you, Dusty. I'll remember you in my prayers.
mama - don't want to go negative but should probably explain :(
8 years ago the cleveland clinic evaluated me for a experimental blowout patch for my weak heart wall but decided there was almost no chance of me surviving the surgery.
Now I'm being evaluated for a new procedure where they replace the weak wall altogether. :)
Bummer, Dusty. hope the tests come out okay.
house, i am so jealous. what flavor of beer for this afternoon?
thanks blanket - me too :)
Wow, Dusty--I hope things work out well for you!
