Viewpoints: Tennessee walks the walk

Thursday, February 11, 2010 at 10:06pm

From the Footprints for Peace organization:

People from around the world are converging at the Y-12 Nuclear Weapons Complex in Oak Ridge on Friday to begin a 700-mile walk for peace.

The protest, called International Footprints for Peace, will span three months and trek through six states.

Marcus Atkinson, the walk's organizer, says it will bring attention to all aspects of the nuclear industry and will demand progress on negotiations to create a nuclear-weapons-free world.

It sounds like they are only concerned about US nuclear weapons. I guess that is why they won't be walking in Pakistan, North Korea or Iran. Peaceniks have killed more people than nuclear weapons ever did. Those who really want peace will prepare for war, Those who want to prepare for slavery will be going on this march. When I see Peaceniks take responsibility for the war casualties that they caused, I will have more respect for what they are pretending to do.

Good morning

dnewton:

Please show the evidence of such accusations, as "Peaceniks have killed more people than nuclear weapons ever did."

By: Captain Nemo on 2/12/10 at 4:34

dnewton:

You preach the talk of all war mongers, “Those who really want peace will prepare for war, (sic) Those who want to prepare for slavery will be going on this march.” Then you say you want the “peaceniks to take responsibility for the war casualties” you will have more respect for them?

What about the people that took us into Iraq on a lie? I don’t hear you demanding their responsibility.

Once the bombs start exploding on all sides, slavery want be necessary.

Good morning, Nashville. This LTE is short and sweet. The link is also a nice touch. I support the idea, but I doubt if it will be effective.

Newton mentioned N. Korea, Iran and Pakistan as places where the group will not be walking. He left out the Jewish State in Palestine, Israel repartedly has over two hundred nuclear warhead, as well as the missiles, missile-launching subs and warplanes needed to deliver them on target, right now.

Israel's huge and illegal nuclear arsenal is the reason that Iran wants to obtain some sort of an equalizer. Israel has repeatedly threatened to unilaterally strike Iran; the Persians just want to be able to return the favor - Mutually Assured Destruction worked for the US and the USSR, the Iranians simply want the same sort of grisly protection. With delusional hot heads, on a mission from God, running the Israeli government and the IDF, I don't blame anyone for wanting nukes, to deter the Israeli nuclear juggernaut.

By: gdiafante on 2/12/10 at 7:02

Wasn't Jesus a "Peacenik"?

The first post of the day is its most ridiculous.

By: gdiafante on 2/12/10 at 7:21

"Israel's huge and illegal nuclear arsenal is the reason that Iran wants to obtain some sort of an equalizer."

Not true. Isreal has not shown the least interest in using their weapons offensively. Iran has many times. This is more about Iran in the overall worlds scheme, they want to sit in the big boys seat.

The rhetoric about Israel is their way to solidify the base, sort of like gay marriage and fear of Socialism rallies the GOP base.

The real question should be, how in the world did the Bush administration think that Iraq was less of a threat than a nuclear Iran? Oh yeah, the vendetta. My bad.

This should have been dealt with years ago.

"Naturally, the common people don't want war......., but after all it is the
leaders of a country who determine the policy, and its always a simple
matter to drag the people along whether its a democracy, or a fascist
dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship...... voice or no
voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders.
That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked,
and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the
country to danger. It works the same in every country."

Marcus Atkinson, the walk's organizer, says it will bring attention to all aspects of the nuclear industry and will demand progress on negotiations to create a nuclear-weapons-free world.

Just yesterday I heard on the news that the "peaceful protesters" in Iran are almost all in prison, in hospitals (?), tortured, and/or dead. I want peace as much as the next person does, but how does the U.S. achieve that goal when other countries such as Iran, kills their own citizens because they ask for peace?

With all due respect, Gdiafante seems ta have been duped by Israeli propaganda.; he wrote, "Isreal has not shown the least interest in using their weapons offensively. Iran has many times".

Sir, that statement reveals a profound ignorance of the historic facts. Israel acted pre-emptively in 1967 and again in 1973. The IDF struck first then and it struck pre-emptively last year in Gaza. Over 1,400 Arabs were wiped out during the 22-day IDF killing spree. Most of the dead were civilians; hundreds of children perished in the rampage.

I know a local survivor of the Israeli attack on the USS Liberty, which took place in June 1967. You should ask him if Israel ever uses its weapons offensively and wrecklessly.

Iran fought a war with US-backed Iraq, but that conflict was instigated by Hussein, not the Mullahs of Iran. Unlike Israel, Iran has never used its weapons against another state, offensively in modern times...please correct me if I'm wrong on that.

The Israelis have world class chutzpah, they demand that Iran comply with the international rules, treaties and protocols regarding nuclear energy and nuclear WMD, while exempting themselves from the same regulations, conventions, diplomatic norms and standards of state conduct.

Last May, President Obama gave "written affirmation" to PM Netanyahu that a nuclear-free ME would not mean that Israel would give up any of its nukes. Netanyahu later blabbed about the secret deal to Israel Radio.

The Nobel Prince of Peace POTUS is a tool of the War Lobby.....Arab-Haters, Holy Warriors and Zionist Gentiles should relax, war with Iran is definitely coming...be patient.

Loner, we're talking about nuclear weapons. I realize your "anything and everything is Israel's fault" but Iran has publicly stated they wish to wipe Israel from the face of the Earth and continually deny the Holocaust.

You're better than defending that rhetoric.

Gee you're right bfra. And who has TIME to feel sorry for themselves? That's so counterproductive!

G, you are right on this. When Iran (or others) say the Holocaust did not happen, I just wonder who they think posed for the photos.

By: gdiafante on 2/12/10 at 8:34

Think of it as this: you are mediating two people who are not friends. Both probably need to be bitched-slapped, but that's not your responsibility. However, both are carrying a gun. Now, do you allow one to shoot the other? Both to just start shooting?

Or do you simply make sure they keep their weapons holstered?

By: Loner on 2/12/10 at 8:35

Dennis Ross, former US Ambassador to Israel and now high-up in the US State Dept. recently went to China to tell their leadership that if the Chinese do not back "crippling sanctions" against their trading partner, Iran, that Israel might strike Iran, on its own, sending energy prices to historic highs.

This is a variation on the old good cop - bad cop tactic. The Chinese are not frightened, stupid coolies; they know full well that Israel would need US assistance to pull off a raid on Iran. Ross insulted their intelligence.

Obama is sending arms to Taiwan, meeting with the Dalai lama (sp?) and demanding that the Chinese re-evaluate their currency to benefit the USA. Obama is also demanding that China go with crippling sanctions on Iran. What is this man smoking?

If and when Israel strikes Iran, it will be with US approval and complicity, everybody knows that the US and Israel are joined at the hip....everybody but Gdiafante, that is.

By: gdiafante on 2/12/10 at 8:36

Loner, apparently I understand that more than you.

By: Loner on 2/12/10 at 8:45

Gdiafante throws the lessons of history aside and boldly defends the apartheid state, he wrote, "I really don't care about Israel's history, we're talking about one nation NUKING another. Anyone see the problem here?"

I see the problem. Israeli propaganda has blinded Gdiafante to the facts, or painted the facts as irrelevant. Sadly, Gdiafante's shortcomings are not uncommon. Every federal lawmaker serves at the pleasure of the pro-Israel lobby - without the support of AIPAC aand the COPOMAJO, political careers go nowhere.

The only nation that ever nuked another nation in anger was the USA, Gdiafante...we did it twice and would have kept on going until every Japanese person was ininerated. You sit on your high horse of morality, but your argument is pure horseshit.

Yeah. I know, Semper Fi....but where is your fidelity, Gd, to the United States or to the Jewish State?

By: gdiafante on 2/12/10 at 8:47

Don't take it so personally, Loner. Believe it or not, some people disagree with you. I know, shocking.

I wouldn't question my fidelity again.

By: dargent7 on 2/12/10 at 9:00

Speaking of horseshit, let me weigh in. To wit, Loner is absolutely correct in the two atomic bombs dropped on Japan was the equivelant of mass genocide. What else do you call it when 100,000 were killed instantaneously and the nuclear fallout killed or maimed hundred's of thousands more? The Pearl Harbor attack killed 1,800 +-. A thousand less than 9/11. Sould Bush have dropped an atom bomb on Saudi Arabia, the likely candidate for the 9/11 attacks since bin Laden and 15 of the 19 hijackers were Saudi? No, the sniveling snake invades Iraq, killing 100,000, one or two bodies at a time.

By: gdiafante on 2/12/10 at 9:03

Genocide

Noun

the deliberate and systematic extermination of a national, racial, political or cultural group.

Nice try, but um...no.
