'Day of the Dead' at Plowhaus

Plowhaus Artists' Cooperative, 211-213 S. 17th street (between Fatherland and Russell streets, is celebrating El Dia de los Muertos Oct. 30-Nov. 38.

Festivities begin Saturday with community Day of the Dead art workshops for kids and grown-ups from 10 a.m.-noon and from 1-3 p.m. and an artists' reception from 7-11 p.m. Saturday.

At this time of year in Mexico, those who have died are remembered and their spirits are welcomed back for a yearly visit.

Handmade altars, special food and drink, parades and plays, skull-shaped confections and toys, graveside visits and vigils celebrate the lives of the deceased. Plowhaus Artists' Coop honors this ancient tradition with an exhibit of themed art.

Artists showing work include Will Branham, Bill Breyer, Katie Brown, Martin Cadieux, Choz, Samantha Callahan, Rosa Cunningham, Eric Denton, Tiffany Dyer, Beth Gilmore, Rachel Hernandez-Hensley, Carrie Hofaker, Beth Irwin, DJ Justice, Mary Sue Kern, Erika Johnson, Franne Lee, Nichole Lobdell, Susie Monick, Copper Newt, Julie Sola and Mayra Yu-Morales.
