Many years before he became a multi-Emmy winner playing the obsessive/compulsive detective Monk, Tony Shaloub was part of the ensemble on Wings. This show focused on the competition and love between brothers Joe (Tim Daly) and Brian (Steven Weber) Hackett, who ran the fictional “Tom Never Field” airport in Nantucket, Mass.
While far from an innovative or landmark property, Wings was a pleasant enough sit-com that lasted nearly eight seasons.
If Wings shared the same kind of humor and fraternal spirit as Cheers, Frasier and Monk, that’s because the four shows were all created and produced by the same writer-producers in David Angell, Peter Casey, and David Lee. Plus, characters from Cheers occasionally made special guest appearances on Wings.
Wings: Final Season (Paramount), a three-disc boxed set, will be released Tuesday. It features a program that had pretty much run its course by its end, but still had a few poignant things to say about family, friends and the work environment.
Both Daly and Weber have since appeared on Monk in guest roles.
If not already there, add "Wings" to list of "Stuff White People Like".
