Billy Collins Jr., a former professional boxer from Nashville who became a champion in the 1980s, will have his tragic tale told in a HBO Documentary called Assault in the Ring, which debuts at 9 p.m. (CDT) Saturday.
Collins (14-0 at the time) lost a unanimous decision to Luis Resto on June 16, 1983 after he was badly beaten in a 10-round fight at Madison Square Garden.
Shortly after the bout it was discovered that significant padding had been removed from Resto’s gloves.
The incident led to criminal charges being brought against Resto and left Collins with permanent physical damage, which ended his career. Less than a year later, Collins was killed in an automobile accident.
