Hot tub heaven

Homeowners throughout Nashville are inviting their friends and neighbors over to watch the big game, see a movie on widescreen television, play video games or are just taking time to catch up with their husbands, wives and kids — all from the comfort of their hot tubs.

For homeowners interested in improvements that add value and enjoyment to their property, the backyard hot tub has become the focus of outdoor living and entertaining.

“The hot tub used to be just for recreation and therapy,” said Scott Taylor, manager of Watson’s of Nashville, 621 Muci Drive. “Now there are models that are all about entertainment.”

Built-in theater systems, high-tech sound systems, iPod docking stations, waterfalls and attractive lighting are features sought by many buyers who plan to do more with their hot tub than soak in it, said Taylor.

Models are available to fit almost any budget, but prices rise as the option list grows. Pool & Spa Depot, 5764 Crossing Blvd. in the Hickory Hollow area, sells entry-level units beginning at $1,499, said spa sales manager Shawn Tangeman. For a high-end model with a home theater featuring a 62-inch screen, MP3 and DVD player, the price climbs to $62,000.

“Many homeowners see a spa as a way to create an outdoor living environment for family and friends to come over, leave life’s stresses behind and relax,” Tangeman said.

The warm, inviting waters of a spa can provide a sense of serenity and peace of mind, said Steve Gorlin, chairman of the Washington, D.C.-based Hot Tub Council, an industry group.

“Extending the living room outdoors and utilizing the warm, calming waters of a hot tub enhances a happy, healthy lifestyle by allowing users to unwind and enjoy a soothing sanctuary on their own property,” Gorlin said.

What to look for

The most popular size spa for a family of four features seating for up to seven people. That way there is plenty of room to relax and move around during family events and plenty of extra room when friends drop by, Tangeman said.

Faux stone exteriors are growing in popularity, both Taylor and Tangeman said, but they are more expensive than other durable options that include acrylic, fiberglass and wood finishes.

With such a wide range of options and prices, buyers can pinpoint the exact model that suits their needs. Some plastic, inexpensive models weigh so little they easily can be moved around in your backyard. Some owners even take their lightweight spas along on RV vacations. The larger more expensive models can become an attractive addition to the backyard deck. Since hot tubs are installed above ground unlike in-ground pools, set up is simple. With all pumps and lines within quick reach, maintenance is easy.

It’s also possible to get the “big spa” experience without the big price, Taylor said. Watson’s sells portable widescreen televisions that are suitable for outdoor use and can be set up next to a spa.

“Having the TV built into the spa is problematic,” he said. “The electronics are constantly exposed to water. We are not a fan of that.”

Swim Spas replace pools

For fitness enthusiasts who want to do more than soak, the spa can be a great place for a workout. Homeowners who love to swim but find themselves cramped for space on a tiny subdivision lot can still have all the benefits of a pool thanks to the Swim Spa. This increasingly popular model allows the user to swim against an adjustable current of water. The effect is the same as swimming in a large pool. Pool & Spa Depot sold three units in one month, Tangeman said.

For stress relief, health benefits, entertaining friends or spending quality family time together, nothing can take the place of the hot tub, Taylor said.

“The hot tub in some ways has replaced the kitchen table,” he said. “It’s really a wonderful family tool. Families sit in the hot tub and catch up.”
