Lovely ‘Lilly’ charms children of all ages

Misty Lewis is looking a little bit mousy these days. And Nashville Children’s Theatre audiences couldn’t more delighted. The multi-talented performer is currently on stage at NCT, reprising the title role in Lilly’s Purple Plastic Purse.

Adapted for the stage by Kevin Kling from the popular book by Kevin Henkes, Lilly’s Purple Plastic Purse follows the lively adventures of Lilly, a precocious little mouse and self-proclaimed “Queen of the World.” This fast-paced show was a big hit when NCT first presented it several years ago, and this production proves to be just as memorable.

Misty Lewis is perfectly cast as the sassy, but sweet-natured little mouse. Whether she’s breaking into spontaneous dance moves (with a wonderfully jazzy score by Paul Carroll Binkley) or doing time in the dreaded “uncooperative chair,” Lewis’ energy never wanes.

Bobby Wyckoff and Henry Haggard are equally engaging as Lilly’s best friends Chester and Wilson, throwing themselves into spirited performances that remind us just how much fun it is to be a little kid (or a little mouse).

Other standouts include Peter Vann — especially wise and sympathetic as Lilly’s teacher, Mr. Slinger — and Patrick Waller, who shines in several roles, including a French store clerk with a certain je ne se quas.

NCT producing director Scot Copeland keeps the action moving along while preserving the picture book feel, with help from the company’s always-reliable production team. Lilly’s imaginative “Light Bulb Lab” drawings are energized via multimedia display. And her pesky baby brother, Julius, comes to life thanks to Pete Carden’s ingenious puppet design. Patricia Taber also deserves credit for her colorful and cartoon-ish costume design, complete with believable mouse ears and tails.

Children of all ages are sure to relate to Lilly’s silly escapades. But there is plenty for adults to enjoy here as well. Lilly reminds local families what quality children’s theater is all about, and what a tremendous resource we have in NCT.
