The 12th Annual Mayor’s First Day Festival is scheduled for Sunday, Aug. 7, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Bridgestone Arena downtown.
Mayor Karl Dean will be on hand to greet attendees at the free, open-to-the-public event, which celebrates the start of the new school year with entertainment, educational activities and free school supplies.
The First Day Festival will include educational booths and musical entertainment from Adam and the Couch Potatoes. Also performing at the festival will be Bob Wilson, principal at the Nashville School of the Arts, with his band, Timeline. During the event, activities and free school supplies will be available to all students through the contributions of Nashville-area community-based organizations and businesses.
A free event for teens will be held after the festival from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Rocketown, located at 601 Fourth Ave. S. The event will feature live entertainment, creative workshops and a three-on-three basketball tournament.
Attendees at the First Day Festival are encouraged to bring a canned food item to benefit Second Harvest Food Bank. More information is available at www.nashville.gov/mocy/firstday/2011/.
