Former Belmont basketball star Alex Renfroe will play professional basketball in Latvia.

The Hume Fogg product who was an honorable mention All-American following his senior season at Belmont signed a contract with Latvia VEF Riga.

“Everyone at Belmont is excited for Alex and his future prospects,” Belmont head coach Rick Byrd said in statement released by the university. “Alex has overachieved and surprised people at every level, and it would not surprise anybody if he thrived professionally. We wish him all the best.”

Renfroe, a 6-foot-2 guard, averaged 16.2 points, 7.2 rebounds and 5.1 assists last season as the Bruins won at least 20 games for the fourth straight time. He led the team in all three categories as well as blocked shots and field goal percentage.

Latvia VEF Riga competes in the Baltic League, where it reached the championship round last season. Based on that success, it also will take part in the 2009-10 EuroCup competition.
