Bruins finish fifth in track and field championship

Hillary Cheruiyot finished in the top five of two events and helped the Belmont men’s team to a fifth-place finish at the Atlantic Sun Outdoor Track and Field Championships over the weekend.

Cheruiyot, a junior from Eldoret, Kenya, was second in the 1,500 (3:56.20) and fourth in the 800 (1:55.36).

Senior Tyler Howell was second in the hammer throw and fourth in the shot put. Junior Jordan Anderson was fourth in the 10,000 (32:01.97), and senior Caleb Schwartz was fifth in two races — the 5,000 (15:05.11) and 10,000 (32:13.59).

Brittany Thune finished second in the 5,000 meters in 17:43.70 for the Belmont women’s team, which finished eighth.

For Lipscomb, sophomores Austin Ray and Jeff Hoover were the top finishers for the men’s team, which was seventh. Ray was fourth in the men’s javelin (158-6) and Hoover was fourth in the men’s 1,500 (4:04.21). Freshman Alex Jerkins was fifth in the men’s shot put (44-3 ½).

Freshmen Catherine Beals (second, 11:43.84) and sophomore Caitlin Anderson (fifth, 12:01.85) both cracked the top five in the women’s 3,000-meter steeplechase. Kristin Ratzlaff, also a freshman, was third in the women’s javelin (110-0).


• McGavock’s Zachary Franklin signed to play baseball with Trevecca Nazarene University. Franklin, a three-sport star in high school, was named McGavock’s most athletic male this spring.

• Trevecca’s Betsy Beaver was named a 2009 Daktronics-NAIA Women’s Golf Scholar-Athlete. The junior from Dayton, Ohio also is a two-time TranSouth Scholar-Athlete.
