Busch guitar-smashing backlash grows

Monday, June 8, 2009 at 2:01pm

Images of Kyle Busch’s guitar-smashing antics following last Saturday’s victory at Nashville Superspeedway have literally gone ‘round the world, creating a sensation on YouTube and other Internet outlets.

Meanwhile back here at home, Nashville Superspeedway Vice President/General Manager Cliff Hawks said Monday, “It’s hard for me to watch.”

Renowned racing artist Sam Bass, who spent countless hours hand-painting the $2,000 Gibson guitar that for nine years has been the track’s trademark trophy, had this to say:
“I wonder how Kyle would like it if I took a hammer and smashed his race car?”

Bass said he was “totally shocked and stunned” as he watched Busch repeatedly dash the guitar to the pavement in Victory Lane.

“I was so shocked that I just stood there,” said Bass who appeared on WSM radio Sunday night to discuss the incident that has the racing world buzzing. “I couldn’t believe my eyes. I was heart-broken.”

Hawks was in similar disbelief.

“When Kyle drew back the guitar like he was going to slam it down, the thought flashed through my mind: ‘Naw, surely he’s not gonna do it!’ And then he did it. I stood there in total disbelief. It was very upsetting.”

Busch said it was a contrived incident. He had told his crew beforehand that if he won the race he was going to smash the guitar “rock-star style,” and divide the pieces among the team members.

The Federated Auto Parts race sponsors were not amused.

“They were really put off and I don’t blame them,” Hawks said. “It’s a big deal for the sponsor to make the Victory Lane presentations. It left a bad feeling.”

Hawks said the ugly incident should not tarnish the track in any way.

“We had absolutely nothing to do with it — I was as shocked and disappointed as everybody else,” he said. “This is all on Kyle.”

Hawks said Busch has not apologized to him or the track for the incident.

Bass said he was given a lame apology and later posed for a photo with Busch and what was left of the shattered instrument. But while Bass smiled for the photo, he was seething inside.

“Let’s just say I wasn’t happy,” Bass said.

“Kyle told me he meant no disrespect,” Bass said, “and I guess I have to take him at his word. I guess he didn’t realize how bad it looked and how upset everybody would be.”

Busch said he would buy two guitars to replace the one he destroyed and even joked about how Bass would make more money by painting more guitars.

“I don’t think he gets it,” Bass said. “He destroyed something that can’t be replaced. He can buy a replica but he can’t replace the original.”

It was noted that if Busch won the Daytona 500 or any other big-league Sprint Cup race he wouldn’t dare dash the trophy to bits in a “rock star” celebration — yet he showed no qualms in destroying a trophy in the second-tier Nationwide Series.

So far NASCAR has not commented on the incident that has added to Busch’s bad-boy reputation.

Bass said the incident will have no adverse effect on his long-standing relationship with the Superspeedway and that he will continue to paint the track’s trophy guitars — named by Sports Illustrated as one of sport’s most unique trophies.

“It wasn’t anybody’s fault except Kyle’s,” Bass said. “He’s the only one who has anything to apologize for.”

NASCAR has to punish him severly if not disqualify him from the win.

I still can't believe he did something that stupid and disrespectful.

Can anyone say, "spoiled rotten," with the emphasis on "rotten?" I've never understood the smashing of guitars during a musical performance, and I sure don't understand this child's thinking

Not a Bush Fan
Nascar is suppose to be a very wholesome Family Sport! Why would they allow Kyle to show such disrespect for Nascar and the Nascar Tropies?

Nascar is wondering just why they are loosing fans????? Duh. this is a no brainer.......the reason is KYLE BUSCH!!

I am one mother that no longer will allow my children to watch Nascar. Since last Sat. night, Nascar has been "off limits" in our home.

What was Kyle thinking? Is he a mental defective, or is he just a plain lame spoiled brat?

Since M & M is his sponsor, and M & M's are eaten by thousands of kids, I think all parents should boycot their products, until they pull their sponsorship out from under him. I bet , even though he is winning, he would have a hard time finding another sponsor.

Nascar should penalize him.

Gibbs Racing should put him on probation, and demand Kyle get on TV and apoligize to Nascar, Nashville, and most of all the thousands of Nascar fans.

I bet he makes his mother proud......................If I was his mother, I would take that brat behind the wood shed!

Glad to know that I'm not the only one who feels "Rowdy" needs to be turned over someone's knee and the tar whaled out of his a**. This latest thing was just too much. Now I know why Kurt refered to him for several years as "my little brother" and wouldn't call him by name or even speak to him. Grow up, Kyle. Your childish antics aren't funny anymore. You're playing with the big boys now.

What a brat. He needs what his parents obviously never gave him; a good whuppin'.

He won, it was his trophy, if he wanted to destroy it, that was his choice.

...just because you can doesn't mean you should. This was a classless move by a kid who appears very full of himself.

Give me a break, he won the race, wanted to smash the guitar ala Hendrix. Leave it to stupid rednecks to not get the joke.

NoQuarter, you are dead right! Don't worry about gd, he will argue with anyone about anything.

I agree with most of these posts that guitar-gate was a stupid, childish, move by a spoiled brat who needs some lessons in appreciation and behavior. I’m glass Bass’s true feelings are being heard regarding this latest tasteless display by the Shrub.

Unfortunately, we’ve all played right into what nascar (the use of small caps is intentional) wants right now, which is all of us talking about what’s happening in nascar. We don’t get to talk about what’s happening in ARCA since they’re not on regular cable, and one almost wonders if nascar’s behind that in an effort to keep ARCA in its place, which to nascar is “not on anyone’s mind.” Until Danica Patrick winds up in a nascar-sanctioned vehicle on a regular basis, the antics of Busch, the decline of Junior, and the resurgance of Stewart are what nascar wants us to talk about. Otherwise would nascar be worth talking about and where would their ratings be? It almost makes one wonder if NASCAR didn't orchestrate this.

Fox’s gopher and its friends were a bad enough distraction but now we have this character called “racebuddy” which appears to be no less than a product of nascar itself! Get rid of the unnecessary clutter and let’s go racing, boys (and Danica).

Thanks TITAN1, but I'm already familiar with gd's antics on these boards. He's quick to resort to name calling when offered a differing opinion on any matter. That is the first time I've been referred to as a stupid redneck, though. It's quite humorous, really, how a person can be stereotyped for typing a few words on a meaningless message board. Way to keep it classy, gd!

gdia, if you really want an obscure Hendrix reference, the speedway should have awared Kyle Busch a scholarship to TSU, and a year's supply of peanut butter, bread and water.

gd, courier, jw, LOL! One and the same! ROTFLMAO!
