Former Davidson Academy coach Becky LeGate has been named the new girls coach at Christ Presbyterian Academy.

LeGate averaged more than 20 wins per season over her 15 years and won her 300th game the past January at Davidson. Her teams won eight district regular season championships, seven district tournament championships, three DII regular season titles and reached the DII final four in 2009. She’s been named coach of the year six times.

“I believe CPA is a place that I could impact the lives of the young ladies that I will come in contact with through athletics,’’ LeGate said in a release. “The spirit of many of the staff members I have met is contagious and makes me want to be a part of that.”

The former Becky Gibbs was a standout player at Greenbrier High where she played for her father, Weldon Gibbs. She is married to former Belmont University player and Davidson boys coach Kevin LeGate, who is the current Davidson AD.

“We are honored to have an individual leading our program the caliber of a Becky LeGate,’’ said CPA AD Mike Ellson, who resigned as girls coach last month, citing that he couldn’t give as much to both jobs as he needed to. “She has so much character and will blend in perfectly at our school.”

“I try to coach my team in a manner to not just make an athlete the best basketball player that they can be but, hopefully, equip them with the life skills needed to be the best daughter, student, athlete, teammate and member of society that they can be,” she said.

Former CPA parent and Belmont U. men’s coach Rick Byrd, who coached Kevin LeGate, said, “Becky is as good a basketball coach and equally good a person as anybody in the state of Tennessee. She is a strong Christian parent, and she coaches that way.”

Her first official duties will be summer camps at CPA, starting July 19.
