CITY PAPER CAMP CONFIDENTIAL

Thursday, Aug. 7, 2008

OFFENSIVE PLAY OF THE DAY: Backup quarterback Kerry Collins was facing a blitz by the Rams defense in a two-minute scheme, and fired a perfect strike that rookie receiver Edward Williams made a nice grab on. Williams, thrust up the depth chart temporarily with several Titans receivers hobbled, enjoyed a nice day all-around, making several good grabs in traffic and catching one pass while losing his shoe during the two-minute period.

DEFENSIVE PLAY OF THE DAY: Titans defensive end Jacob Ford continued to flash in training camp, getting into the St. Louis backfield to stop the running back for losses on two consecutive plays.

TOPIC OF CONVERSATION: Vince Young’s afternoon was a bit inconsistent. He began with a nice throw to Paul Williams on a deep pattern for a touchdown in team drills, and in two-minute made an even better throw to a diving Chris Davis (Florida State). However, in between, Young struggled with a couple of interceptions, including one in the flat to LenDale White in seven-on-seven that Will Witherspoon would have taken for a touchdown.

WORTH NOTING: With both Tony Brown and Albert Haynesworth missing at defensive tackle on Thursday with what Jeff Fisher termed as “rest,” Jason Jones and Antonio Johnson got the start at that spot in Thursday’s practice. But defensive end Dave Ball also took some snaps inside on Thursday afternoon.

INJURIES: In addition to Brown and Haynesworth, others held out of practice Thursday included receiver Biren Ealy (groin), who missed a second straight day. Roydell Williams (ankle) and Justin McCareins (hamstring) were also out. None of that trio is expected to play on Saturday night.

Also, safety Calvin Lowry (back) did not practice in the afternoon. Cary Williams’ knee will have to be evaluated, according to Fisher, while tight end Dwayne Blakley is out with a groin strain.

Rob Bironas and Josh Miller continue to miss time as they rehab groin injuries.

KEEP AN EYE ON: Rookie safety Tony Joiner continues to show up on occasion. He intercepted Bruce Gradkowski of the Rams on a tipped ball in team drills Thursday afternoon.
