There were a few tricks and a few treats as CPA beat Goodpasture 21-10 on Halloween night to win the Region 5-2A championship.

The trick was the first play of the game from scrimmage when the ball was handed off to Luke Roman of CPA. It looked like Roman was going to run around the right end but stopped short in the backfield and threw back to one of his receivers, Will Drummond, who had got behind the defense. It was his only catch of the night, but it was for 43 yards and it put the Lions in scoring position.

“This was our Trick of Treat play we wanted to start the game with,” CPA coach Jay Mathews said.

Four plays later on fourth down, Zaccheus Mason took a handoff from Luke Roman and powered straight up the middle running over three Cougar players scoring the first score of the game, giving CPA a 7-0 lead.

In the second quarter, Stephon Dawson got the Cougars back on track with some nice long runs for Goodpasture. The Cougars settled for a 35-yard field goal to cut the lead to 7-3.

CPA took a 14-3 lead into halftime thanks to a Roman-to-Mason hookup for a touchdown.

CPA took a 21-3 lead in the third quarter when sophomore Nolen Genovese threw to Tyler Kemp for 26 yards and a touchdown.

Goodpasture was not going to go down without a fight and with 3:56 left in the fourth quarter, Keenan Reynolds hit Weston Wolfe on the right side of the end zone, cutting the score 21-10. After a roughing the passer called on CPA on the play, Goodpasture kicked the ball off from the 45-yard line and tried an on-side kick, but CPA's Will Drummond fell on it.

After the Cougars held the Lions on a fourth down play Goodpasture would get one last -ditch chance with 2:14 left in the game.

The game was put to rest when CPA's Lincoln Lakoff stepped in front of a Reynolds throw and intercepted the pass and ran it back for 29 yards before being pushed out of bounds. CPA then ran the clock out.

“We are so excited for being the Region champs," Mathews said.
