Dave Loos will step down as Austin Peay State’s athletic director but remain the Governors’ basketball coach, the school announced Monday.
For 23 years, Loos has coached the Govs’ men’s basketball team. In 1997, he also took over as athletic director.
According to Austin Peay, when Coppin State’s Fang Mitchell resigned in 2006, Loos was the only college basketball coach in the country to hold both positions.
The school will hold a press conference Tuesday morning at Dunn Center, which houses Dave Loos Court. He will continue to serve in the dual role until a successor is named this spring or summer.
Loos is the all-time wins leader at both Austin Peay and in the Ohio Valley Conference with 241 wins. But the Govs are coming off back-to-back 20 loss seasons for the first time in school history.
Plus, the responsibilities of basketball coach and athletic director inconveniently meshed this season. Football coach Rick Christophel resigned in late January to become the tight ends coach of the Arizona Cardinals. His departure left Loos without a football coach less than two weeks before signing day and in the middle of basketball season.
Just two weeks ago, Loos hired Kirby Cannon, former secondary coach at Central Michigan, to replace Christophel.
