Jorge Gutierrez, former shortstop at Lipscomb, has signed a minor league contract with the Kansas City Royals. He is expected to be assigned to the Burlington Royals, the Rookie-level affiliate for Kansas City.

Gutierrez batted .286 as the leadoff batter in all 63 games this past season. He belted 21 extra base hits and stole 18 bases. A native of Miami, Fla., Gutierrez transferred to Lipscomb from UAB for his senior season.

Gutierrez will be joined at Burlington by former Belmont star Carlos Testa.

The Burlington Royals are a member of the Appalachian League and are located in Burlington, NC. The Royals open their season on June 17.

AYERS 13TH AT NCAA:Tennessee freshman and Nashville native Michael Ayers is 13th in the decathlon after the first five events at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Des Moines, Iowa. Ayers has 3,703 points.

Ayers started his first national championship competition with an 11.17 run in the 100 before long jumping 21-10. Ayers then recorded a shot put mark of 41-2 1/2 and cleared the high jump bar at 6-1 1/2 before running a time of 49.87 in the 400.

BISONS ADD VOLLEYBALL TRANSFER: Lipscomb coach Brandon Rosenthal has announced the addition of Elly Kaiser, a defensive specialist who is transferring from Illinois State.

Kaiser, a 5-foot-5 sophomore, is from Champaign, Ill., where she was a two-year starter for Centennial High School. She played in eight games for Illinois State.

“We recruited her out of high school,” said Rosenthal. “We were surprised she was looking to transfer. She is somebody who is really going to come in and make a difference on the defense. She will ultimately make us better in practice as well.

“It will be fun to see her because she is transferring from a different program. Illinois State is a very, very good program. She is coming from a big school to a smaller school and bringing that experience with her.”
