Fast start carries Predators to victory at Edmonton

Shea Weber had a goal and an assist in the Preds' 5-3 win Tuesday in Edmonton.

Shea Weber and Marcel Goc scored 28 seconds apart in the first period and sent the Nashville Predators on their way to a 5-3 victory over the Edmonton Oilers on Tuesday at Edmonton.

Ryan Jones had a goal and two assists, and Weber, Goc, Patric Hornqvist and J.P. Dumont all had a goal and an assist as Nashville (28-16-3, 59 points) won for the second time in as many days and the sixth time in its last eight games.

Hornqvist made it 4-0 when he scored his team-leading 18th goal at 6:40 of the second period. It was his fifth goal in the last five games. He also was called for the game’s first penalty – with 6:58 left in the contest – which led to the Oilers’ second goal.

Jones answered the first two of the Oilers’ three third-period goals when he scored on the power play with 3:01 remaining. He also had assists on goals by Weber and Dumont, the latter with 52 seconds to play in the first period. The second-year forward had one assist in 27 games coming into the night.

Pekka Rinne kept Edmonton (16-24-5, 37 points) off the scoreboard until Jean-Francois Jacques scored at 7:22 of the third period. Rinne made 37 saves and improved to 18-8-2 for the season.

The Oilers, who have the worst record in the Western Conferece, pulled starting goalie Jeff Deslauries following Hornqvist’s goal. He made 10 saves on 14 shots.

The Predators will conclude their three-game swing through Western Canada on Friday at Calgary.


• Predators’ prospect Blake Geoffrion is one of 70 players under consideration for the Hobey Baker Award, presented annually to the top player in college hockey.

The senior forward at the University of Wisconsin and Nashville’s top pick (second round, 56th overall) in 2006 has a team-high 14 goals in 19 games. He also has four assists.

The Hobey Baker recipient will be determined, in part, by fan voting throughout three different rounds. Voting in the first round is underway now through March 7 at
