Father Ryan, Overton toss up some holiday hoops

Just after unwrapping their Christmas presents, a lot of Nashville area basketball players will begin getting ready for some holiday hoops.

Three-time champion Father Ryan will host its annual Irish Christmas tournament, starting Monday. The Irish host Murfreesboro Blackman in a tough opening round challenge.

“We’ve got another really good field coming this year,’’ said Ryan Coach Doug Bontrager who collected his 400th coaching victory last Friday in a win over Franklin. “We’re looking forward to three exciting days of some really good basketball.’’

Bontrager’s team is defending champ and has won the title three times. The Ryan-Blackman clash is the finale of four opening day games. Consolation and semis games are Dec. 29, with finals in consolation and championship games Dec. 30.

Over at Overton High, the Overton Christmas tournament will be held the same three dates, Dec. 28-30, and Bobcats have again invited 10 games for the boys’ field.

There is an ambitious 10-game card (six boys, four girls) the opening day at Overton, starting with an 8 a.m. boys game between Pearl-Cohn and the host Bobcats. One of the games Monday is a second-round match-up of boys’ winners earlier in the day.

The nightcap features an out-of-town showdown between Arkansas power Abundant Life and Giles County of Middle Tennessee.

“We’ve got a lot going that first day,’’ said Coach James McKee, whose team had to win two games in one day last year to get to the finals.

The Bobcats also had an exciting overtime win over Spring Hill, which is again in this year’s field. Overton (9-2) lost its final pre-Christmas game Tuesday to West-state powerhouse Liberty Tech, 76-53.

Of local note, CPA opens play in the Hickman County tournament in Centerville Monday as the Lions meet Harding Academy.
