With two easy wins so far in the state tournament, Franklin High (19-4-2) guns for its 11th state soccer championship when the Rebels met Houston High (20-1-2) for the crown 1:30 p.m. Saturday in the Class AAA final at Chattanooga.
It is a rematch of last year’s final between the two powerhouses in a match Houston won. It was that school’s fourth state title.
Franklin’s 10th and last championship came in 2003.
In Thursdays’ semifinals, Franklin blanked Knox Catholic 4-0. That followed a 6-1 victory in the previous round.
Junior Chesney White broke open a close game with two second-half goals, and goalkeeper Bethany Taylor notched the shutout for Franklin.
Houston ended Ravenwood’s season with a 1-0 victory.
In Division II-AA, defending champion St. Agnes ended the Pope John Paul II’s season with a 2-1 win victory. Cailin Harris’ 22nd goal of the season was the only goal for JPII.
St. Agnes meets Baylor in the final Friday. The Raiders blanked 2007 champ Battle Ground Academy 4-0.
• State cross country: The TSSAA State Cross Country championships will be held Saturday at Edwin Warner Park Steeplechase course, beginning with the Class AAA girls race at 10 a.m. The boys AAA meet follows.
The A/AA girls race is at 11:30 a.m., followed by the boys, DII-A girls at 1 p.m., followed by boys, then the DII-AA girls race begins at 2:30, followed by boys.
The MBA boys and Harpeth Hall girls are strong threats for DII-AA team crowns.
Lipscomb sophomore Barbara Lee Ball, who ran away with the region race two weeks ago, shoots for the A/AA title.
• Middle School semis: Perennial powerhouse J.T Moore and the Donelson won semifinal games Thursday afternoon and advanced to the Metro Middle Schools football championship next Thursday at Hillsboro High.
Moore broke a 16-16 tie and scored the game winning touchdown on a pass play with 41 seconds left and beat Thurgood Marshall 22-16. Donelson rolled past Goodlettsville 22-6.
