No. 11 Georgia defeated No. 18 Georgia 12-10 Sunday at Hawkins Field to capture the regular-season Southeastern Conference baseball championship.

The Bulldogs won two of three games in the series after the Commodores won Friday. VU needed to sweep the series to pull into the SEC lead and defend its conference championship.

"It's tough to watch them win the SEC on our field," Vanderbilt outfielder Dominic de la Osa said. "We just have to move forward."

Georgia surged to a 6-0 lead in the second inning, then held on as the Commodores rallied in the late innings. VU scored four runs in the eighth inning, then added one in the ninth to cut the lead lead to 12-10.

Vanderbilt had a runner on base before Georgia reliver Joshua Fields struck out Brad French to end the game.

The Commodores fell to 37-15 overall and 15-11 in SEC play. Georgia, SEC champion for the third time since 2001, improved to 33-17-1 and 19-7-1.

Vanderbilt can ensure itself a spot in the SEC Tournament by winning one of three games this week at Florida. The three-game series opens Thursday.

The top eight teams in the league, based on winning percentage, will play in the SEC Tournament May 21-25 in Hoover, Ala.
