Goodenow gets first collegiate start in Vandy win over MTSU

Richie Goodenow came away from his first collegiate start concerned with his ability to finish.

“Two strikes, I didn’t put anybody away,” he said. “I let them hang around.”

The sophomore lefthander from Overton pitched the first 3.1 innings for Vanderbilt against Middle Tennessee State on Tuesday after 31 career relief appearances. He did not get a decision in the Commodores’ 15-7 victory.

The outcome was in direct contrast to the teams’ meeting in Murfreesboro, an 8-0 victory for the Blue Raiders, who brought a .331 team batting average into this one.

“I thought it was the right matchup against this particular club,” coach Tim Corbin said. “I don’t know what the matchup is against this team from a pitching standpoint. I just wanted him to get a start and get some innings out there because he’s been getting spotty innings.”

Goodenow allowed four runs on five hits (three doubles) with two strikeouts and three walks in the longest outing of his career. His longest previous outing was 1.1 innings.

He threw 77 pitches, 44 of them strikes. He left with one out and one on and the score tied 3-3 in the top of the fourth.

“He probably got a little tired,” Corbin said. “He threw 77 pitches when he’s used to throwing 25.”

Freshman Sonny Gray replaced Goodenow and allowed the inherited runner to score. However, Gray got the win — and improved to 3-0 — with the help of a seven-run fifth inning, which put VU (22-13) ahead to stay.

Junior catcher Andrew Giobbi was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and four RBIs, including a three-run home run in the fifth. Freshman left fielder Joe Loftus also had three hits.

MTSU (24-9) got three hits, including a solo home run, and three RBIs from sophomore left fielder Bryce Brentz.

“It was different,” Goodenow said. “It was fun. I should have helped the team out better than I did but it was fun for a first start.”
