New Tennessee coach Lane Kiffin wasn’t kidding about hitting the ground running in terms of recruiting in-state talent.
Kiffin was officially announced as UT’s coach on Monday afternoon and then he reportedly flew to Memphis to visit Harding Academy receiver Marlon Brown.
He’s been busy calling area prospects, too. Hillsboro defensive back Eric Gordon said he’s already heard from Kiffin.
Gordon, a 5-foot-9, 187-pound cornerback, is a four-star prospect according to Rivals.com and is one of the most-recruited DBs in the Southeast.
“I actually talked to the new coach,” Gordon said. “He seems like a guy that knows what he’s talking about. He seemed down to Earth.”
Gordon’s Rivals.com profile lists Alabama, Miami, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Texas Tech as his leaders. Gordon said on Tuesday he was pretty wide open on which school he would attend and said he was still trying to figure out when to take his last official visits. Asked if he was impressed with Kiffin’s pitch, he had a simple answer.
“Most definitely,” he said.
Brown, a five-star recruit according to Rivals, told the Knoxville News Sentinel that Kiffin was direct in telling him he would play right away.
“He told me that when I came in at first, I’d be running fades and slants, then screens, then posts,” the 6-foot-5 receiver told the News Sentinel. “That’s great to me.”
Gordon’s Burros will take on Maryville in the Class 4A state championship game on Saturday in Murfreesboro. Maryville has won 74 games in a row, including four straight state titles.
“We’re just coming out ready to play football, man,” Gordon said.
If I'm Eric I would strongly consider UT. Kiffin connects well with players and is well respected. kiffin will be successful. His record speaks for itself. He will bring the right system to win.
Kiffin will bring in kids that Coach Fulmer couldn't have competed for. This is what UT needed an injection of fresh blood,& someenthusiasm.
