Late shot lifts Lipscomb women by Belmont

Catie Woods’ had the shooter’s touch, and because of it the Lipscomb Lady Bisons will advance to the semifinals of the Atlantic Sun women’s basketball tournament.

Woods’ shot from the corner, bounced on the rim then went up into the air and fell through giving Lipscomb a 73-72 victory over rival Belmont in the opening round of the tourney at Allen Arena. Lipscomb (10-21) faces top seed East Tennessee at 2:15 p.m. Friday in the semifinals.

Woods’ basket came with 8.9 seconds to play, and Belmont had a final chance to win the game, but Amber Rockwell’s 22-foot shot at the buzzer rimmed out, setting off a celebration by the Bisons.

Belmont (14-16) led throughout most of the game, leading by 11 points twice midway through the second half before Lipscomb tied the at 60-60 with 7:47 to play. However, Lipscomb did not lead in the second half until Woods’ final shot.

Jessica Bobitt led the Bruins with a game-high 25 points, while Jilian Partin had 18 for Lipscomb and Katie Rollins added 17.
