The Battle of the Boulevard will not only carry on but next season will make its earliest debut in the 59-year history of the men’s basketball rivalry.
Lipscomb hosts Belmont on Friday, Nov. 9, at Allen Arena in the season opener for both teams. The Bruins then welcome the Bisons on Tuesday, Dec. 4, to the Curb Event Center.
The schools agreed to the one-year deal as Belmont is leaving the Atlantic Sun Conference to join the Ohio Valley Conference in July. A Lipscomb spokesperson said both schools are committed to continuing the rivalry after the 2012-13 season on a year-to-year basis.
Out of the 130 games in the series, only 20 have been before January. The last meeting prior to Thanksgiving was Nov. 21, 1992.
Belmont has never played Lipscomb in a season opener. The Bisons opened the 1954-55 campaign against the Bruins, who were playing their second game of the season.
Lipscomb leads the series 73-57 and five of the last seven. The teams have split the series the past two seasons.
Belmont finished the 2011-12 season with a 27-8 record and its second straight outright A-Sun title, and reached the NCAA Tournament for the fifth time in school history. Lipscomb was 13-18 and was tied for sixth in the conference.
