Lipscomb pair leads state's haul of weekly soccer awards

Lipscomb swept the Atlantic Sun Conference’s weekly men’s soccer awards and players from Vanderbilt and Tennessee earned SEC recognition, it was announced Tuesday.

Freshman Alexander Faulk, a forward from Birmingham, Ala., scored the first two goals of his collegiate career as the Bisons defeated Oral Roberts and Marshall by identical 1-0 scores on Friday and Sunday, respectively. He came off the bench in both matches and ultimately earned all-tournament honors at Belmont’s Mafiaoza’s Invitational.

He was named A-Sun Player of the Week on Tuesday.

Sophomore goalkeeper Brent McGee recorded both shutouts for Lipscomb and was named Defensive Player of the Week.

• In the SEC, Vanderbilt junior forward Molly Kinsella was named Offensive Player of the Week after she had two goals and three assists as the Commodores improved to 5-0 on the season with victories over Belmont and Oklahoma.

Tennessee junior goalkeeper Molly Baird was named Defensive Player of the Week with shutouts of Minnesota and Wisconsin. With saves on all eight shots she faced, she extended her current shutout streak to 264:12.

• Vanderbilt is ranked No. 25 in the latest Soccer America poll, which was released on Tuesday. It is the first time since 2006 the Commodores are included among the national top 25.

The National Soccer Coaches Association of America also has VU rated fifth in the South Region.

“We really like where this team is at physically, mentally and emotionally,” coach Ronnie Woodard said. “We need to keep building on the success that we have had and can’t rest on the recent results. It’s a long season and we will need to continue to improve every day as our competition gets more and more difficult.”
