Lipscomb’s Miguel DaSilva, the conference’s top scorer in 2008, was named the Atlantic Sun Preseason Player of the Year, the conference office announced Thursday.

The junior forward had nine goals and 11 assists for 29 points in 21 games last season. He was the only unanimous 2008 all-conference selection.

Teammates Garrett Pettis, a sophomore forward, and senior defender Kezi Lara joined DaSilva on the preseason all-conference team. Pettis was the Bisons’ leading goal scorer last season with 12.

Lipscomb was one of four teams to receive at least one first-place vote but was picked to finish fourth by the conference coaches.

Belmont was picked sixth.

More polling

Belmont’s women’s programs are highly regarded in preseason voting by coaches in their respective sports.

The cross country team, which has won three straight conference titles and seven of the last eight, was tabbed the favorite to win again this season.

The volleyball team, the 2008 A-Sun champion, was picked second, and the soccer team, coming off an NCAA tournament appearance, was picked fourth, its highest preseason ranking ever in the Atlantic Sun.
