DELAND, Fla. – Kellie Sirus and Abby Keese each drove in two runs, and the first six batters in the lineup all had at least two hits as Lipscomb defeated East Tennessee State 6-0 in the opening round of the Atlantic Sun Conference softball tournament on Thursday.
The Lady Bisons then lost 2-0 to Mercer in a second-round matchup later in the day. Mercer's Lacey Richardson limited them to one hit, a single by Lauren Dortwegt, and three walks. The defeat dropped Lipscomb (38-13) into an elimination game 2:30 p.m. (CDT) Friday.
The game against ETSU was the first A Sun tournament victory ever for Lipscomb, which was 0-6 with a total of eight runs scored in three previous trips.
Sirus drove in two runs with a first-inning double, and Keese did the same with a second-inning double as the Lady Bisons built a 5-0 lead after two innings.
Whitney Kiihnl, who was named he conference freshman of the year on Wednesday, pitched a two-hit shutout. She struck out 10 and did not allow a walk.
It was the 17th shutout of the season for Lipscomb, the most in a single season since the university began play in the NCAA.
