Lipscomb's A Sun softball tournament title hopes end despite fast starts

DELAND, Fla. – Despite a couple of fast starts, Lipscomb’s run at the Atlantic South softball tournament came to an end Friday.

The Lady Bisons (39-14) scored three runs in the first inning twice but were eliminated one game short of the championship round with a 10-4 loss to Mercer.

Mollie Mitchell and Christen Campbell each had RBI singles in the first as Lipscomb built a 3-0 lead. Kellie Sirus’ RBI triple in the second made it 4-2, but Mercer went ahead to stay with three runs in the top of third.

Sirus had two hits, her third multi-hit game in four tournament contests. Lauren Dortwegt, whc scored on Sirus’ triple, was 2-for-4 with a walk and two runs scored.

It was Lipscomb’s second loss of the tournament to Mercer, which also won 2-0 in a second-round game Thursday.


Kellie Sirus and Abby Keese scored on a throwing error during a three-run first inning, which carried Lipscomb to victory over Stetson in the day’s first elimination game.

The Lady Bisons had two more hits than Stetson (23-31) but also took advantage of six errors and scored five unearned runs.

Sirus had two doubles and an RBI. Lauren Dortwegt and Abby Wilson each also had a pair of hits.

Freshman Whitney Kiihnl struck out 14, including five in the final two innings, in a complete game and earned her second win of the tournament.

Lipscomb, the tournament’s No. 2 seed, advanced to another elimination contest, against No. 3 Mercer, immediately following its victory.
