Montgomery Bell Academy’s football team is ranked No. 1 in the state in all classes by the preseason Sonny Moore Computer Power ratings service.

The Big Red, which has fashioned a two-year 23-2 record (including the ’07 state DII title), is ranked ahead of Maryville, Alcoa, Brentwood Academy, defending DII state champ MUS and defending 4A champ Hillsboro (ranked 2-6) in the Moore rankings.

Though an honor of sorts, most folks are not award of Sonny Moore and his ratings service.

“I haven’t heard of such a poll, and I doubt many of our players have either,’’ said Coach Daniel McGugin, who has taken his first two MBA team to the state title and a semifinal playoff appearance. “And we’re not paying any attention to it.

“At the same time, it is flattering to hear something like that. But it’s not going to make one bit of difference as to what happens on a Friday night.’’

According to the Moore ratings, MBA has a state-best 146.64 rating, Maryville is at 144.14, Alcoa 142.63, Brentwood Academy 142.57, MUS 140.99 and Hillsboro 140.39.

The poll also ranks area teams Smyrna (8th), Franklin (9th), Lipscomb (13th) Ensworth (16th), Maplewood (18th), Brentwood High (22nd), Father Ryan (30th), Independence (33rd), Goodpasture (39th), Ravenwood (42nd), Hunters Lane (46th) and BGA (50th) in the top 50.

Not much love is shown toward defending DII-A state champ Davidson Academy. The Bears, who return the state’s top rusher in Justin Williams, are ranked 173rd.

In the preseason Earl Nall Performance Ratings, MBA, Brentwood Academy and Ensworth are ranked No. 2-3-4 in DII-AA behind MUS. Davidson Academy is ranked fifth in DII-A.

Also in the Nall Ratings, Hillsboro is rated No. 2 in 5A (behind only Henry County), Lipscomb and Maplewood are rated No. 1-2 in 4A, and Goodpasture and CPA are rated No. 6-7 in 3A. Franklin is rated No. 3 in 6A.
