Ogilvy helps VU overcome Arizona for fifth place at Maui Invitational

A.J. Ogilvy had 20 points, seven rebounds and three blocked shots but missed six free throw attempts as Vanderbilt defeated Arizona 84-72 Wednesday in the fifth-place game of the EA Sports Maui Invitational.

As a team, the No. 24 Commodores shot just 51.7 percent (15-for-29) from the foul line. They entered the game having made 69.7 percent of their free throws for the season.

Jermaine Beal made three of his four foul shots, including two for a second-half technical foul, in addition to six field goals. He finished with 18 points, five assists and two steals. Jeffery Taylor added 13 points and 10 rebounds.

Ogilvy registered his season-high point total when he shot 9-for-15 from the field but just 2-for-8 from the line.

He scored five points in a 14-2 second-half run, which put Vanderbilt (4-1) ahead to stay. The junior center started the run with a layup and a free throw and added a layup, which made it 59-56 with 9:50 remaining.

Arizona (3-2) got within two on several occasions the rest of the way, the last time at 67-65, but never pulled even.

The Commodores led 34-30 after a pair of Lance Goulbourne free throws with 5:05 to play in the first half. Arizona then scored 11 straight points before Taylor’s tip-in at the buzzer got Vanderbilt within five, 41-36, at intermission.

It was not until a John Jenkins layup and free throw made it 57-56 with 10:48 remaining that Vanderbilt led again.

The Commodores will play their next two games at home, beginning next Wednesday against Missouri (8:30 p.m., ESPNU).
