Plenty of local prep athletes take advantage of early signing period

The NCAA’s early signing period began last Wednesday and a bushel full of area athletes seized the opportunity to solidify their college plans.

Christ Presbyterian Academy and Franklin Road Academy had the biggest hauls.

CPA’s Lauren Thompson (Belmont), Faith LeGate (Lipscomb) and Meredith Roman (Belmont) all signed national letters-of-intent to play basketball, and 2010 state tennis champion Sydney Campbell (Vanderbilt) rounded out the group.

At FRA, Kessler Bell (Flagler for men’s basketball), Derica Wyatt (Oklahoma for women’s basketball), Sam Burrus (Lee for women’s golf), Rachel Johnson (Xavier for women’s golf) and Philip Fossee (West Virginia for swimming) signed grants.

The early signing period concludes Wednesday.

A look at other area athletes who have signed thus far:

• Boys basketball: Jamontae Davis, Hillsboro (Tennessee State), Asa Duvall, Brentwood (Stetson) and Josh Phillips, Pope John Paul II (MTSU).

• Girls basketball: Nicole Bowers, Hillsboro (Eastern Kentucky), Porche Hannah, Pearl-Cohn (Grambling), Jemiah Leonard, Hillsboro (Tennessee State).

• Baseball: Brandon Ashworth, Goodpasture (Trevecca), J.P. Brenzie, Goodpasture (Trevecca), John Bolton, Lipscomb Academy (Trevecca), Caleb Herndon, Ezell-Harding (Lipscomb), Penn Murfree, MBA (Vanderbilt) and Jamie Young, DCA (Lipscomb).

• Golf: Maddie Williams, Ensworth (Belmont).

• Softball: Mimi Cartwright, Goodpasture (Lipscomb), Christiana Gable, Ezell-Harding (Austin Peay), Courtney Geralds, McGavock (Tennessee State), Victoria Hope, Independence (Trevecca), McCarley Thomas, Lipscomb Academy (Lipscomb).

• Swimming: Alex Goss, Ravenwood (Yale), Grant Stafford, Ravenwood (Miami, Ohio), Tate Ramsden, MBA (Dartmouth).

• Tennis: Maxx Lipman, Brentwood High (Florida) and Aaron Jumonville, MBA (MTSU).

• Volleyball: Katelyn Atkinson, Goodpasture (Trevecca) and Dana Dusenberry, Ravenwood (Bridgewater).

It is really great to see athletic scholarships going to young women. I hope everyone on the list takes full advantage of everything college has to offer!
