Blake Geoffrion scored his first NHL goal but the Nashville Predators managed just one point as they fell to the Edmonton Oilers 2-1 in a shootout on Tuesday in Edmonton.

David Legwand, who scored the game-winning goal Sunday against Columbus, had a chance to end the shootout in regulation but the Predators’ third skater had a backhand attempt deflect off the crossbar. The Oilers ended it in the fourth round.

With that outcome, Nashville lost ground in the Western Conference playoff race as Dallas and Calgary both won.

The Predators had a decisive edge in shots (35-26), including 18-7 in the first period, but failed to separate themselves from the Oilers, who have the NHL’s worst record. Edmonton recorded two of the three shots in the four-on-four overtime period.

Geoffrion gave Nashville a 1-0 lead when he got to the front of the net and drove home a pass from Ryan Suter. It was the third career game for the franchise’s top 2006 draft pick (second round, 56th overall), who made his NHL debut Saturday at Dallas.

The advantage was short-lived, however, as Edmonton answered 41 seconds later when defenseman Jim Vandermeer’s shot from the point found its way through traffic and past goalie Pekka Rinne.

It remained that way throughout the rest of regulation and overtime.

Nashville continues its current four-game road trip Thursday at Vancouver, which has the league’s best record.

This really sucks. We have to beat the Oilers, period! We just don't have the horses. This season started for me with so much excitement and promise and we're going to end up in the cellar of the west. Very sad. I guess there is always next year...

Too many injuries this year. Its not over yet, but its not looking good. The Preds are not playing like a playoff team.

No they are not. It will be luck if we get another point on this road trip.

We are to young. No goal scorers. Injuries. No trade deadline deals(thanks Poile). Let go of guys who can actually score(Peverly, Santorelli, Scottie Upshall, etc.), again thanks David Poile.

I believe it was the 'youngest' one who got the goal. We have been very streaky and now it is time to start the winning part of that streak again. GO PREDS!

I'm thinking Suter is not the motivator we need in the locker room. He's too quiet, too laid back. We need a captain with a no nonsense attitude that will get in the players' faces when they screw up and do some motivating when we get injuries. We don't seem to have that at all. So things aren't looking up to be sure. I'm not convinced that we even need to make the playoffs because we will likely embarrass ourselves even if we do make it. Ah well, maybe next season will be our season. We have all the young'uns who can do nothing but get better, and maybe we can retire some who are resting on their laurels and their paychecks.
