Preps: Brentwood boys, girls hope home court pays dividends

Staff reports

Led by their district tournament MVP, senior James Cox, the high-scoring Brentwood High boys will take on up-and-down McGavock in their opening round game in the Region 6-AAA tournament Friday on the Brentwood court.

The 8:30 p.m. game is the finale on a busy quarterfinal day on the Bruins’ court.

Brentwood is led by Cox, junior Jack Montague and hot-shooting sophomore Cody Shelton.

McGavock was a surprise finalist in last year’s region tournament but finished a disappointing fourth in last week’s District 11-AAA tourney.

The Brentwood girls, led by district MVP Kyla Kerstetter, meet Cane Ridge at 7 p.m.

The Bruins avenged a recent loss to Hillsboro with a win over the Burros in the district tournament finals.

Both Brentwood teams (each won its district tournament) have the added advantage of playing on their home court, which will host the entire tournament beginning with four games Friday.

Overton, fresh off its District 12-AAA boys championship, will meet Centennial at 5:30 p.m., with the district champ Hunters Lane girls kicking off the proceedings at 4 p.m. against Franklin.

The second set of games is Saturday. The tournament runs through next week.

On Saturday, Glencliff’s girls meet Hillsboro with the highlight being a top post dual between the Colts’ Briana Morrow and Hillsboro’s Isabelle Harrison. Hillsboro won the regular season meeting 52-40 back on Nov. 30.

• Ex-Glencliff coach Scott Murray has accepted the head football coaching position at Whites Creek High, becoming the third Cobra coach in the past three years. He replaces Mose Phillips, who resigned recently after a 1-9 season.

Murray guided Glencliff to its first playoff berth in 10 years in 2009 when he took the Colts to the 5A state playoffs.

• Mark Hayes has resigned his position as girls basketball coach at Maplewood High. The Panthers finished the season at 8-14 and had to forfeit its last game at CPA due to lack of players. The team had improved from a 5-21 season the year before.

On Feb. 7, the program had its probation extended to 2014 following an on-court incident involving players. That followed a probation ruling for fans fighting in a February, 2010 district tournament game with Stratford.

Applications for the position are being received at the office of Metro AD Roosevelt Sanders at 259-8783.

• Ryan, which considered moving its DII boys sectional game at Memphis Briarcrest up to Friday, has changed it back to Saturday, its original date, as mandated by the TSSAA.

• CPA has moved its girls Region 5-AA Friday quarterfinal game with Westmoreland up to 6 p.m. The CPA-Westmoreland region boys game remains at 7 p.m. Saturday at CPA.
