Preps: Extra batting practice pays off for Goodpasture baseball

Senior first baseman Jay Rhoten went 5-for-5 with a home run and six RBIs as host Goodpasture crushed Christ Presbyterian Academy 13-4 in the Region 5-AA baseball finals.

“Three of the five times, I came up with men on base, and I was looking for a fastball, something to drive,” the 6-foot-1, 245-pound cleanup hitter said. “It's definitely my best game of the season.”

Rhoten had three singles, a double and capped his big day with a towering three-run homer to center in the sixth as the defending state champ Cougars (32-3) pounded out 15 hits off two Lions pitchers and scored in every inning.

Leadoff batter Alex Turner had two hits and scored twice and No. 2 hitter Caleb Wilson had two hits, scored twice and got on base all five times.

That was plenty for junior right-hander J.R. Davis (8-0) who scattered eight hits and also had two hits and scored twice.

For CPA, catcher Carson Shrode belted a solo homer in the second and and senior Brandon Jean hit a two-run homer in the fifth.

“I was disappointed with how we hit the ball Monday [in a semifinal win over Hume-Fogg], and we had extra batting practice Tuesday,” Goodpasture coach Richie Estep said. “Our entire batting order did a good job [Wednesday], even the guys at the end of the lineup.”

Goodpasture hosts Marshall County in AA Sectionals on Friday. CPA (28-12) visits Spring Hill.

Those winners advance to state next week.
