Pretty in pink? Titans' Johnson to wear pink shoes vs. Jaguars

Thursday, October 1, 2009 at 2:52pm

Chris Johnson already has a pair of cleats in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, thanks to his efforts two weeks ago against the Houston Texans.

Now, Johnson’s shoes are about to be the center of attention again, as he is one of a number of NFL and Titans players who will wear pink cleats on Sunday as part of the NFL’s alliance with the Breast Cancer Awareness program. Johnson will also wear pink gloves for the game.

Johnson is even taking the situation one step further, provided he can find the necessary equipment.

“I’m looking for a pink mouthpiece, something like that, to do it all out,” Johnson said.

Johnson said representatives at Nike asked if he would be willing to wear the pink cleats for Sunday’s game against the Jacksonville Jaguars and he readily agreed, since it was for a good cause

“It’s something a lot of people support and make as a fundraiser and things like that, so it’s a good thing. It’s about showing people out there that have breast cancer that we support them,” Johnson said. “Nike asked me about it, and I said I would do it. I agreed to it, it’s a good cause, so why not.”

Johnson said he has already tried on the cleats, and they are comfortable and that the gloves should arrive on Friday.

Might the pink shoes wind up on display in the Hall of Fame, too?

“Hopefully, I can have a good game and they’ll want to put them in the Hall of Fame, too,” Johnson said.

Johnson said while a lot of player wear their game cleats in practice a day or two before, he breaks his out in warm-ups on game day because, “I don’t want to get them dirty.”

Players around the league, including Cincinnati’s Chad Ochocinco, Minnesota’s Brett Favre and New Orleans’ Drew Brees ,are also scheduled to take part.

Empty house?

With the Jacksonville Jaguars having attendance problems – their opener against defending NFC champion Arizona drew only 46,520 - the Titans are preparing for a slightly different atmosphere then they normally face there.

But Coach Jeff Fisher said it won’t make much difference to the visiting Titans.

“It should not for the visiting team. Jack [Del Rio] is a good coach. He deals with those kinds of things. I don’t think it’s going to have an effect,” Fisher said. “You just have to prepare the club that it may not be sold out and it may not be as loud as you expected. When you go on the road, you’ve got to generate your own energy anyway. It’s us against everybody in there. This may be a little different, but I don’t see it being an issue for us.”

The Titans will have at least some support in Jacksonville as running back Chris Johnson, who is from Central Florida, will have about 20 friends and family on hand.

“A lot of people who don’t get a chance to come all the way up to Tennessee, can come to the game, because it’s just right up the road,” Johnson said.

Johnson is friends with Jags receiver Mike Sims-Walker, who also will have lots of fans at the game.

“I’ve got a friend on the Jacksonville team, and he’s got a lot of people coming up, too, so hopefully they’ll have more attendance at this game,” Johnson said.

In and out

Cornerback Cortland Finnegan did some light jogging on the side with his injured right hamstring, as did linebacker Stanford Keglar, who also has a hamstring issue.

Running back LenDale White is still suffering from the flu but watched practice after missing Wednesday.

Defensive tackle Jason Jones missed a second straight day with a sore shoulder, but Fisher said he was likely to play against Jacksonville.

Fisher should put them all in pink the way they are playing.

It would look better than the old Oiler's uniforms.
