MURFREESBORO – Goodpasture allowed two runs in the bottom of the sixth and was eliminated from the Class AA baseball tournament with a 3-2 loss to Pigeon Forge on Wednesday.

The Cougars got the tying run to third in top of the seventh but Lance Jerreld grounded out to end the contest.

Goodpasture (29-12) went up 2-0 in the second when Shawn McVey led off with a single, and Weston Wolfe followed with a double. They scored on groundouts by Connor Hawkins and Hunter Miller, respectively.

Pitcher Turner Bush limited Pigeon Forge (34-6) to just six hits. He did not allow a base runner until the third and did not give up a hit until the fourth. He struck out six and walked four in a complete game.

Collierville 11, Independence 1: Independence committed an error in each of the first four innings and was eliminated from the AAA baseball tournament with its second loss in as many days.

The Eagles (32-11) trailed 9-0 after four before Ford Wilson produced their only run with a lead-off home run in the fifth. They loaded the bases following Wilson’s blast but failed to score again.

Wilson also had a sixth-inning single and accounted for half of Independence’s four hits.

Father Ryan falls in opener

Father Ryan committed three errors in the fourth inning, which helped break open a previously scoreless game and sent St. Benedict (23-13) on to an 11-1 victory in the first round of the Division II-AA softball tournament on Wednesday.

Father Ryan pitcher Brittanie Albright allowed one hit through the first three innings but gave up the game’s first run when she was tagged with a lead-off single and a one-out double. St. Benedict added two more runs in that inning without another hit and then tacked on three more in the fifth and five in the sixth.

The Lady Irish (18-12) scored their lone run in the fifth. Olivia Waters and Hannah Harris opened with back-to-back singles. Waters scored when Albright grounded into a fielders choice.

Hume-Fogg 1, University School-Jackson 0: Senior Justin Williams scored the game’s only goal in the 84th minute as Hume-Fogg advanced to the A-AA semifinals.

The Blue Knights won despite decisive disadvantages in shots (8-4) and corner kicks (8-1). Senior goalie Hunter Allen made six saves for the shutout.

This should be the last great sports year at Goodpasture.
