The Tennessee Titans agreed to terms Monday with punter/kicker Ricky Schmitt.
Schmitt has appeared in one NFL game, having made two of three field goal attempts for the San Francisco 49ers on Dec. 27 against the Detroit Lions.
Schmitt’s bid to make the roster will be an uphill climb, as they are solid at both the punter and kicker positions.
Brett Kern was claimed off waivers from the Denver Broncos in midseason last year and would appear to have a stronghold on the position, averaging 45 yards per punt after joining the Titans to go with a 41.4 net average. Long-time Titans punter Craig Hentrich recently retired after ending last season on injured reserve with a calf injury.
Rob Bironas has an even stronger hold on the place-kicking position, having become one of the NFL’s most reliable kickers over the past three seasons and agreeing in 2009 to a four-year, $12 million extension with Tennessee.
Bironas was 32 of 37 on field goal attempts last season.
Schmitt attended Shepherd University and has spent time in camps with Arizona, Pittsburgh and Oakland.
