Titans find a way to get it done

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Just win, baby.

That phrase was coined by the Oakland Raiders way back when, but since they don’t do much winning anymore, perhaps the 10-0 Tennessee Titans should adopt it.

Especially after Sunday’s 24-14 comeback victory in which the Titans rallied from an 11-point halftime deficit to complete biggest turnaround to date this season and finish off the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Two quarters in, all signs pointed to the Titans finally succumbing to fate with the ’72 Miami Dolphins ready to exhale and pop the champagne.

But these Titans don’t go away quickly or easily, as the Jaguars found out in the Tennessee-dominated second half that ended with 21 unanswered points by the visitors.

Those points came courtesy of quarterback Kerry Collins’ arm, as he rifled three second-half touchdown passes, a 13-yarder to Brandon Jones that pulled the Titans to within 14-10 on their first drive of the second half.

That was followed with a pair of touchdown passes from Collins to Justin Gage, a 56-yard on the next series to give Tennessee its first lead, and a 38-yarder with 3:57 to play that sealed it and sent the Titans to their 10th straight win to open the year and 13th in a row dating to last year.

How unlikely was Sunday’s turnaround? It took Collins’ first three-touchdown passing performance since Dec. 31, 2005. It gave Gage the best receiving day of his career with four catches for 147 yards and the two scores.

And it came with the Titans down to the last man standing at cornerback in Chris Carr, who naturally had a game-turning interception and batted away two other David Garrard passes after replacing and injured Eric King, who started only because Nick Harper was out with an ankle injury.

“They find a way,” offensive coordinator Mike Heimerdinger said. “I’m getting a lot of gray hair, and I don’t know if I can keep taking it, but the great thing is I love the way they compete. I’ve said from the beginning that I love the way these guys work at it and compete and they don’t panic.”

In the locker room halftime, with their first loss staring them squarely in the face at halftime, the Titans showed no signs of panic — only resiliency and determination to make amends for a first half that saw Jacksonville rush for 91 yards and a pair of Maurice Jones-Drew touchdowns, plus a seven Tennessee penalties for 32 yards.

Add to that, the fact that the Titans were 0-for-6 on third down and that Collins was intercepted on the first series of the game, and it was as bleak a setting as the team had faced this season.

“All the touchdowns they got, we gave it to them,” defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth said. “There were all the penalties and giving them extra yards to get down. Once we cut out the nonsense we were doing, and quit giving them stuff, they couldn’t move the ball on us.”

While Collins ignited the offense with his arm, completing 9 of 13 for 144 yards and the three scores in the second half, the defense stifled Jacksonville by allowing just 84 yards and no points after halftime.

When it was over, the Titans had stayed perfect for another week and took another step toward their ultimate goal as a team brimming with confidence.

“If we play Titan football, we feel like we can’t lose,” Gage said.

Yet, the Titans say it is confidence combined with hard work and humility that have kept them unblemished through 10 games now.

“I think the most important thing for us is to stay humble. That’s a big part of what allows us to come play every Sunday and gives us a chance to win,” Collins said. “If we don’t play well, we’re going to lose. This team has a little bit of, ‘Hey, we’ve got to come and play every week,’ and I think that’s what’s allowed us to come in and play well.

“We know that if we don’t come to play, things are going to happen like happened in the first half. Having said that, we found a way to win, and that’s the most important characteristic of all.”

1999, plus one. Yes?

By: blktenn on 12/31/69 at 7:00

Collins did a outstanding job. Looks like VY is learning how to get things done as a QB in the NFL

By: house_of_pain on 12/31/69 at 7:00

Yes, we have become a "second half" team. The offense makes proper adjustments at halftime, something Norm Chow couldn't seem to wrap his head around. Good job. Go Titans!

Another great win and another reason for Jeff Fisher to be the Coach of the Year.

By: gdiafante on 12/31/69 at 7:00

Why? For beating a team you're supposed to?How about that Tony Sporano?? Taking THE Worst team in the league and making them a playoff team. That's coaching.

By: ycartrob on 12/31/69 at 7:00

one more time gdiafante: The Dolphins aquired a better QB (Pennington) in the off season and he is now the 7th rated passer in the NFL. The Dolphins are not 7-3 without Pennington. PERIOD. The Titans LOST their starting QB after game 1 and have been winning with Collins, the 25th rated passer in the NFL, but the Titans are STILL #9 in total average points. Throw in the #1 rated defense and you get 10-0! Hate it, don't you?

By: gdiafante on 12/31/69 at 7:00

"The Dolphins are not 7-3 without Pennington. PERIOD."And I suppose the Titans are 10-0 with Young? You make me laugh

By: ycartrob on 12/31/69 at 7:00

They showed a stat yesterday that Fisher is 49-2 ON THE ROAD when taking a lead into the 4th quarter. 49-2; Pretty amazing.

By: gdiafante on 12/31/69 at 7:00

Wow, that is amazing! How many road games have they had this year? Even if they were all road games, his record would have been 39-2 at the start of the season, yet he was not the coach of the year in 2007? What???TRAVESTY

By: ycartrob on 12/31/69 at 7:00

gd, I cannot respond to inarticulate posts. The Titans are 10-0, you're just going to have to live with that. I hope the Dolphins make the playoffs, I'm a big fan of Pennington, Porter and Brown; hopefully Porter gets the sack record this year.

By: gdiafante on 12/31/69 at 7:00

Oh Rob, there was nothing inarticulate about my post, you just hate the truth. Oh well, go Titans!! lol

By: ycartrob on 12/31/69 at 7:00

Hate the truth? I didn't think Fisher should get the nod in 2007. You're just making things up. Good grief. You must really hate Fisher. That's sort of funny to me.(And yes, your previous post makes very little sense; 39-2? 10 Road games? They were TRAILING the Ravens going into the 4th in Baltimore. You're all over the place man.) Good luck continuing to hate Fisher and the Titans, I hope it works out for you.

By: gdiafante on 12/31/69 at 7:00

That sound is the point going way over your head. That's ok, you'll get it sooner or later I'm sure.Go Titans!

By: TITAN1 on 12/31/69 at 7:00

Great job, Titans! It is great to be a Titan fan living in Tennessee! Now how about 11-0!

By: BigPapa on 12/31/69 at 7:00

I just want some other teams to step up and knock the colts and ravens out of the wild card spots (if that's possible.)

By: OneTimer on 12/31/69 at 7:00

i hate to say this, but i hope they don't go 16-0. their chances of going to the Super Bowl will be less if they haven't experienced defeat yet.

By: house_of_pain on 12/31/69 at 7:00

They will probably be in a position to rest most of the starters in a few weeks. I'm sure we will lose the last couple of games, but it won't matter to us by then. See that shiny little thing in the distance? It's the Lombardi trophy, and it's coming home to Tennessee!

By: gdiafante on 12/31/69 at 7:00

"See that shiny little thing in the distance? It's the Lombardi trophy, and it's coming home to Tennessee!"Where to begin? First, The Lombardi Trophy has never had a home in Tennessee, ever, so it would be hard for it to "come home

By: house_of_pain on 12/31/69 at 7:00

First, the Titans were not picked to make it that far (but they will).Second, the Lombardi trophy may not realize this is home, yet, but it will.Third, IF the dolphins make the playoff trip to Nashville, Sporano will look just as confused an ineffective as all the rest!

By: Jokapsig on 12/31/69 at 7:00

gd- Are you somehow related to Boomer Esiason? Both of you have a half-empty attitude towards the Titans. Go away you miserable slug. And go Titans!

By: gdiafante on 12/31/69 at 7:00

I'm sorry pig, I didn't realize you can't take opinions other than your own. So sad.

By: gdiafante on 12/31/69 at 7:00

"Third, IF the dolphins make the playoff trip to Nashville, Sporano will look just as confused an ineffective as all the rest!" That’s what I was thinking. I mean look at the way Belichick embarrassed him earlier in the year…oh wait…

By: Jokapsig on 12/31/69 at 7:00

gd- we can tell you a little but we can't tell you a lot. I guess you've left your cookies in the oven a little too long.

By: house_of_pain on 12/31/69 at 7:00

Jokapsig: gd IS Boomer Esiason!

By: gdiafante on 12/31/69 at 7:00

You two should get a room.

By: house_of_pain on 12/31/69 at 7:00

Yeah, a room in Tampa!

By: gdiafante on 12/31/69 at 7:00

You're right. You should. Please make reservations now. Thanks.
